Lecture by Ms. Kawashima at KUL

On May 9, a lecture entitled “Working for the World as a Japanese” was held by Ms. Kawashima at the Dutch-language Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) as part of the Japanese classes of the University’s Japanese Studies Master’s Course. Ms. Kawashima, who is a Captain in the Japan Maritime Self Defense Forces (JMSDF) and is currently an Adviser to the Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security at NATO, discussed and exchanged ideas with the students on topics such as “The characteristics of Japanese and Internationality”, “The JMSDF and International Cooperation”, “Women and Leadership” and “Working at an International Organization”. Around 40 students listened attentively to the lecture of Ms. Kawashima, which was rich with suggestions based on her own experiences as one of the female Commanding Officers of JMSDF ships, and as a staff participating in the field of Women and Security at NATO. It was furthermore a valuable opportunity to deepen thoughts about current pressing issues in which international cooperation is needed, and themes such as the role of women in society and the importance of women’s involvement in security.
