160th Anniversary of Friendship Japan-Belgium Event: Brussels Flower Carpet 2026

From August 13 to 16, as part of the 160th anniversary of friendship between Japan and Belgium, Brussels Flower Carpet event was held at the Grand Place in Brussels, with Japan serving as the guest of honor.
This year’s flower carpet was designed by Japanese artistic group Enlightenment, led by contemporary artist Mr. Hiro Sugiyama, and depicted Katsushika Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” in a design that fused the elegance of traditional ukiyo-e with the experimental energy of contemporary art.
Starting early in the morning, approximately 750,000 dahlias were laid out across the Grand Place by around 150 volunteers including students from the Japanese Saturday School of Brussels to depict the surging waves in a grand composition.
