Exchanging a Japanese driver’s license for a Belgian license
If you are a Japanese driver’s license holder and you now officially live in Belgium, you will need to change your license to a Belgian license.
To be able to have the license exchanged, you will need to submit a translation thereof issued by the Embassy of Japan in either French or Dutch, depending on the official language of your place of residence.
Contact the Consular Service during office hours for more information.
Consular Section Address : Rue Van Maerlant/ Van Maerlantstraat 1, 1040 Bruxelles/Brussel Opening hours : 09.15 – 12.00, 13.30 – 16.00 (Mon – Fri, except holidays) Tel : 02/500.05.80 |
Once you have obtained the translation you will have to submit it to the driver’s license section at the city hall of your place of residence to apply for a Belgian license.
On March 15, 2019 Belgian laws concerning the exchange of foreign driver’s licenses have changed and require applicants to wait for 185 days following their official registration in Belgium before they can receive a Belgian driver’s license. In the meantime the valid Japanese driver’s license can be used. Since the license is completely written in Japanese, to avoid unnecessary problems, it is advised to also carry a translation.
For more detailed information about the Belgian driver’s license, contact the Belgian authorities (city hall of your place of residence or the FPS Mobility of Belgium) directly.
