Opening of Yasujiro Ozu Anthology Film Festival

2019/9/17

On September 13, the opening of the Yasujiro Ozu Anthology Film Festival was held at Cinematek in Brussels, which Ambassador Shimokawa attended. This film festival is co-organized by the Embassy of Japan in Belgium, the Japan Foundation and Cinematek. Following the special features of Mikio Naruse two years ago and of Kenji Mizoguchi last year, this event screens the works of a Japanese great master of cinema. For this edition’s special feature, 10 film reels were borrowed from the Japan Foundation, and a total of 25 films will be screened, including 7 silent films.
At the opening, Ambassador Shimokawa gave a speech prior to the screening of “Late Spring” (1949), which can be said to be the culmination of Ozu’s style. Recollecting the memories of his own years as a student in Paris where he watched many of Ozu’s films at Cinematek, Ambassador Shimokawa said he wishes the fans to fully enjoy the world which director Ozu has created.

The Yasujiro Ozu Anthology Film Festival is held until November 14.
