JAPANESE STUDIES STUDENTS

General conditions

  • Belgian nationals
  • Born between 2 April 1995 and 1 April 2007
  • Following academic backgrounds
    • Applicants must be undergraduates at foreign (non-Japanese) universities majoring in fields related to the Japanese language or Japanese culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan.
    • Furthermore, only applicants who have studied Japanese Studies for a total period of one year or more as of September 1, 2025 are eligible for this application.

Application Schedule
The following schedule may change according to regulatory measures.
Application deadline 16:00, 10 February 2025
Written exams and interviews*1 Written exam: 14:00, 17 February 2025 (TBC)
Interview: The final week of February or the beginning of March 2025 (TBC)
Results of primary screening in Belgium*2 March 2025
Secondary screening in Tokyo From May 2025
FINAL RESULTS with placement by Tokyo August 2025
Departure for Japan September/October 2025

*1: Past exams can be viewed here. Kindly note that the written exams for Japanese Studies Students programmes are not disclosed.
*2: Please note that, although candidates may be successful up until this point, the final result depends on confirmation of your university placement.

How to apply
・Please download the application documents from the following website and prepare them.

・Make an appointment by email (info@bx.mofa.go.jp) for your documents submission during the application period (until 10 February). Make sure that you have all the required documents.
  Opening hours: 9:15-12:00 and 13:30-16:00 (Mon.- Fri.)

・Application documents will be examined in your presence.
*If you are unsure about your documents, you may send them via email to have a preliminary check.

Notes
  • Please read the application guidelines thoroughly.
  • Do not send your application by post or e-mail.
  • Do not visit the embassy without appointments.
  • Incomplete applications or late submission will not be accepted.
