Message from the Ambassador

 

I am Takeshi OSUGA, and I have recently arrived in Brussels to assume the post of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan in Belgium.

Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985, I served in overseas posts in countries such as Algeria, France, Indonesia, India, and at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations in New York. At the Ministry's headquarters, I have held various positions including Director-General for Africa as well as Press Secretary, Director-General for Press and Public Diplomacy. Most recently, I served as Ambassador to Tunisia, on the other side of the Mediterranean, for three years since 2022.

Belgium is a strategic partner for Japan, sharing fundamental values. We maintain traditional friendly relations which are underpinned by close exchanges between our Imperial and Royal families. The year 2026 marks the 160th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Belgium in 1866. Numerous events are planned throughout the year to commemorate the 160th anniversary of Japan-Belgium friendship and I look forward to actively participating with you all to make it a truly memorable year.

Many Japanese companies have set up their branches in Belgium and are active in various sectors such as manufacturing, logistics and services. Their advanced technological capabilities and steadfast commitment to corporate responsibility serve as a bridge between Japan and Belgium, extending further to Europe, and contribute to the economies of both sides. Many Japanese people are also active in fields such as academia, arts, music, gastronomy and sports. On the occasion of the 160th anniversary of Japan-Belgium friendship next year, I hope to see new encounters in all of these fields, which will further broaden and deepen the people-to-people exchanges between our two friendly nations.
