NHK World Screening of “The Lost Hokusai” and “Kurara – the Dazzling Life of Hokusai’s Daughter”

2018/2/9

On February 7, the documentary “The Lost Hokusai” was screened at the Japan Information and Cultural Centre (JICC) with the cooperation of NHK World.

Before the screening, Ms. Kono introduced the artist Hokusai, who left over 30.000 works in his life and who influenced European artists, such as impressionist Van Gogh and Art Nouveau artist Émile Gallé. The documentary showed the process of restoring Hokusai’s illusionary masterpiece, which was destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. To the interest of the viewers, the restoration was based on a single black and white photograph, by making use of the latest technology and craftsmanship.
On February 21, with the cooperation of NHK World, there will be a screening of the drama “Kurara – the Dazzling Life of Hokusai’s Daughter”, depicting the life of Katsushika Hokusai's daughter, O-ei Katsushika.
