BRAFA Art Fair

The BRAFA Art Fair is much more than just a fair: it's a colorful event, a tradition eagerly awaited at the start of each year. In January 2025, for its 70th edition, Europe's oldest art and antiques fair, and one of the most prestigious, will welcome 130 Belgian and international galleries in Palais 3 and 4 at Brussels Expo. From Sunday 26 January to Sunday 2 February, collectors and art enthusiasts will have the pleasure of discovering over 10,000 exceptional works, covering a wide range of styles and periods: from archaeology to modern and contemporary art, from design to jewelry, including furniture, sculpture, ceramics, photography, tribal art and even original comic strip plates...

This festive edition will be enhanced by two monumental, colorful installations by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, this year's guest of honor. Thanks to an unprecedented partnership with the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA), visitors will be able to explore the latest innovations in art conservation and restoration and take part in interactive workshops on this theme. And to take this artistic journey even further, guided tours (BRAFA Art Tours) will be offered daily at 3pm, followed by captivating lectures (BRAFA Art Talks) at 4pm. BRAFA 2025 is an absolute must for all art lovers!

We are pleased to welcome Galerie Taménaga with several galleries in Japan and who represents contemporary Japanese artists: Takehiko Sugawara, Kyosuke Tchinaï, Tamihito Yoshikawa.

Among the Japanese artists presented at BRAFA, visitors will be able to discover a beautiful Bijin in Arita porcelain at Lemaire, an exquisite set of Japanese porcelain with Kakiemon decoration at Christophe Perlès, a delicate Hagiawase jardinière by Yoshiko Okamoto at Kunthaus Kende, wonderful ceramics by Kurokawa Tōru at Galerie Hioco…

14/02 Lecture
À la découverte du saké Japonais

Often mistaken for a distilled spirit, Japanese Sake (Nihonshu) is actually a fermented beverage made from rice similar to wine with an alcoholic content around 15- 16%. During this lecture-tasting, we will discuss the specificity of this traditional Japanese beverage recently recognized as a world heritage, the ingredients it is made from, the secret of its umami, as well as an insight on the brewing process. Through a short tasting, you will also be able to experiment a small part of the large aromatic and flavor spectrum of Japanese Sake. We will also discuss the specific Japanese terms used to describe the several types of Sake. The lecture will be held in French, but questions are welcome in English and Japanese as well.

NHK Symphony Orchestra in Antwerp

NHK Symphony Orchestra has been scheduled to have a tour in Europe in May 2025, after a five-year absence, performing 8 concerts including Belgium (Antwerp).

The NHK Symphony Orchestra, the finest among this elite circle, makes its debut in the Elisabeth Klassiek series, led by renowned chief conductor Fabio Luisi.

They begin with one of the most popular piano concertos ever written, Edvard Grieg's concerto, featuring the masterful pianist Rudolf Buchbinder. With over 60 years in his career, the Austrian authority lives and breathes Grieg's music. Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony, bathed in a world of sun and optimism, concludes with prophetic words: 'a vision of heaven, seen through the eyes of a child.' Soprano Ying Fang, like an angel descending to earth, interprets this beautiful poetry from Des Knaben Wunderhorn. (quotation from Antwerp Symphony Orchestra)

Wish Festival: Tanabata

Tanabata, also known as the Wishing Festival, is a captivating celebration that originated in Japan and traditionally marks the beginning of summer. On July 6, the Japanese Garden will host this colorful festival, inviting visitors to celebrate the legend of Orihime and Hikoboshi. The story is about two lovers separated by the Milky Way, who are only able to meet once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month. During Tanabata, visitors hang wishes and decorations on bamboo branches, hoping they will be fulfilled. It is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy traditional music and, of course, the serene beauty of the garden itself. Don't miss this chance to experience the magic of Tanabata in the Japanese Garden!

Chrysanthemum Festival

Each year, the Japanese Garden ends its season with a stunning highlight: the Chrysanthemum Festival, also known as Kikumatsuri. This year promises to be extra special, as the event is dedicated entirely to our devoted volunteers. Together, they have transformed the garden into a true spectacle of color and art.

The chrysanthemum has a rich history in Japan. Introduced from China in the 6th century, the flower quickly became popular due to its medicinal properties and its association with longevity and rejuvenation. The Imperial Family was so inspired by the chrysanthemum that it became the imperial symbol—an honor that continues to this day. Additionally, the chrysanthemum symbolizes autumn and the rice harvest, with the first Chrysanthemum Festival dating back to the year 910.

This year, the focus is on creativity and collaboration. A dedicated group of volunteers has carefully and passionately transformed the Japanese Garden into a magical place where you can admire the beauty and symbolism of this remarkable flower.

Closed on Monday (October 20).
