Inauguration of Nemo Link Project
On December 5, Ambassador Hayashi attended the official inauguration of the Nemo Link project, which connects the electricity grids of Belgium and the United Kingdom. The event, held near the city of Bruges, included a number of leading energy policy and electricity industry figures, such as Ms. Marie-Christine Marghem, Belgian Federal Minister of Energy, Mr. Philippe De Backer, Belgian Federal Secretary of State for the North Sea, Permanent Secretary of the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the President and CEOs of British and Belgian transmission owners National Grid and Elia, as well as Mr. Inoue, CEO of Sumitomo Electric Industries. The ceremony marked the completion of subsea and underground cable laying works and the construction of the DC/AC converter stations.
Sumitomo Electric Industries is a key supplier in the project. It has provided 400kV subsea and underground power cables that stretch 140 kilometres between converter stations in Belgium and the UK. Sumitomo Electric Industries has supplied in total 280 kilometres of cable with the state-of-the-art technology. By enabling power trading between Belgium and the UK, Nemo Link strengthens security of supply, provides access to cheaper energy, and supports the integration of renewable generation.
