2022/10/25
On 12 October, the Embassy of Japan co-hosted an opening event for the “Shin-Hanga” exhibition at the Art & History Museum, a three-month special exhibition to present no less than 220 Shin-Hanga prints. This exhibition is a sequel to the very successful Ukiyo-e exhibition held in this museum in 2016, as part of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Belgium.

Followed by a welcome speech given by Mr. Bruno Verbergt, Director General of the Art and History museum, H.E.Mr. Thomas Dermine, State Secretary for Economic Recovery and Strategic Investments, in charge of Scientific Policy at the Federal Government congratulated on the opening of this exhibition. In his remarks, Ambassador Shimokawa addressed that as Ukiyo-e had an influence on masters like Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh in the 19th century, so Shin Hanga has on modern worldwide figures such as Steve Jobs, and that Shin-Hanga has been gaining increased attention in Japan in recent years. This opening ceremony concluded with a Kitsuke (Kimono wearing) performance, another form of Japanese art, conducted by C’ISM, Brussels NPO

A large number of people from various fields attended this event, including but not limited to, Belgian Government, international institutions, NATO, diplomatic corps, universities, sports and arts communities. Participants were fascinated by the delicacy of Shin-Hanga prints and uniqueness of their colouring. They also enjoyed wearing yukata (Japanese summer kimono) and photoshoots in front of the photospot with a large copy of a Shin-Hanga print, which was specially prepared for this event.

The Shin-Hanga exhibition is open until 15 January 2023.
