[Ambassador] Launch event of the Japan Chair at VUB-CSDS

On 29th November, Ambassador Shimokawa attended the launch event of the Japan Chair, organized by VUB-CSDS (The Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy at the Brussels School of Governance, Vrije Universiteit Brussel). The Japan Chair was established with the support of the Japanese government, and at this event VUB-CSDS officially announced its establishment in Belgium, following the inaugural event in Tokyo last month at which Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan attended.
The launch of the Japan Chair was celebrated by H.E. Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, Mr. Karel De Gucht, President of the Brussels School of Governance (VUB), Prof. Luis Simón, Director of VUB-CSDS, Dr. Eva Pejsova, Japan Chair at VUB-CSDS, among others.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Shimokawa welcomed the launch of the Japan Chair at VUB-CSDS and stated that in the face of serious challenges to the international order it is necessary to intensify cooperation among like-minded countries which share fundamental values, while emphasising the importance of strengthening ties between Japan, Europe, and NATO in the Indo-Pacific region. High Representative Borrell highlighted in his keynote address that the EU should engage more in and with the Indo-Pacific.
The launch of the Japan Chair is expected to strengthen partnerships among Japan, NATO and the EU. The Embassy of Japan will continue to provide support in reinforcing cooperation at the political, academic, and administrative levels.
