2023/8/17
On the 17th of August, Ambassador Mikami attended the international conference of the European Association for Japanese Studies (EAJS), hosted by Ghent University's Department of Japanese Studies. During the opening event, Ambassador Mikami delivered a speech to express his congratulations on the organization of the conference and to stress the importance of academic exchange in the bilateral relations.

The EAJS is an association of scholars, researchers and students engaged in Japanese Studies. Founded in 1973, the general objective of the EAJS is to promote research in Japanese Studies in Europe. Held every three years, the last conference was held online in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, Professor Niehaus of the Department of Japanese Studies at Ghent University and his team made considerable efforts to organize the hybrid conference. During the conference from 17 to 20 August 2023, more than 1,000 participants from different countries exchanged ideas on Japanese studies through various workshops and symposia.

Prior to attending the opening ceremony, Ambassador Mikami  paid a courtesy visit to Mr. De Clercq, the Mayor of Ghent, in which they exchanged views on Japan-Belgium relations, with a focus on Ghent's sister city, Kanazawa in Japan.
