[Ambassador] An exclusive opening event for the “Shohei Imamura Retrospective”

On the 14th of September, the Embassy of Japan hosted an exclusive opening event for the “Shohei Imamura Retrospective” at CINEMATEK, the royal film archive of Belgium. CINEMATEK, in cooperation with the Japan Foundation, has featured Japanese renowned film directors such as Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Akira Kurosawa, and this year they will show all the twenty-five works of Shohei Imamura during the period.
 

For the opening, “Black Rain” (1989), one of the masterpieces of Shohei Imamura was screened. In his speech prior to the screening, Ambassador Mikami explained the importance of screening this film at a time like today when the threat of nuclear weapons is keenly felt once again. The film received many positive comments from the audience that the film made them reflect on themselves, and their wish for peace became stronger.
