[Ambassador] Benefietweekend (Charity event) for 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake in Ghent

2024/2/1
On the 20th and 21st of January, a two-day charity event was organised with the aim of supporting the Hokuriku area, which has been affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake on the first of January this year. Ghent and Kanazawa, the sister cities since 1971, gathered people in Ghent to show solidarity with the earthquake victims.

On the 20th, the Ghent-Kanazawa Supporters' Club organised the 'Hokuriku Arts & Crafts' workshop at MIRY Café, where visitors experienced traditional Hokuriku crafts such as the kinpaku (gold leaf) workshop.

On the 21st, the Charity Concert “Steun Japan” was held at the MIRY Concert Hall in Ghent, organised by Marou Vandenheuvel (a photographer and a graduate of the Japanese Studies Department at Ghent University), Hiroyuki Yamamoto (editor-in-chief of the Japanese community magazine Aoi Tori), and flutist Toshiyuki Shibata. At the concert, ten musicians, including a baroque violinist and proponent Sigiswald Kuijken, and a world-renowned violinist Yuzuko Horigome, who has organised “Fukko (recovering through music)” charity concerts for many years to support the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, presented beautiful performances.

Ambassador Mikami attended the concert and gave opening remarks. In his speech, Ambassador Mikami expressed gratitude to the organizers, performers, supporters, and concert attendees for their support, wishing that our thoughts and prayers provide support and encouragement to those who are affected.
