Fragments of Japan

As textile designer and architect we conducted a 3 months research in Japan in 2023 about textile crafts, natural fibres and traditional carpentry. We connected to local artisans and explored the rich Japanese cultural history in crafts.

In April 2024 we will present the results of our research. It will be the opportunity to present a glimpse of the impressive world of Japanese craftsmanship and dream together about the future potential collaborations between Belgium and Japan.

Fragments of Japan is about craftsmanship, people and reflections.

This exhibition will be the first milestone in the creation of a Foundation with the aim to develop partnerships between Belgium & Japan in order to weave together arts & crafts, traditional & contemporary, handmade & technologies by curating spaces for creation & transmission in both our countries.

To mark ARTONOV’s tenth anniversary, dancer-choreographer Akaji Maro, a living butoh legend, meets virtuoso cellist Eric-Maria Couturier, soloist with the Ensemble intercontemporain, for an original performance.

Based on Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suites, the butoh dancer and the musician dialogue and improvise, in a radical staging that transcends historical periods, cultural areas and artistic genres.

With a narrative based on the development of a human being, the performance explores with intensity the notions of identity, in all their ambiguity and contradictions.

A powerful and harmonious encounter between two strong, original personalities at the peak of their art.

What is There | Artist: Fumie Onuki

When viewed from the front, Fumie Onuki’s works appear at first glance to resemble the shoji screen doors that are a familiar aspect of Japanese traditional architecture. When looked at from the side, however, they reveal themselves not as shoji lattices but as clusters of box-shaped objects of varying depths and with uneven surfaces.

Each of these box-shaped objects is covered with handmade Nepalese paper. In the translucent parts of the paper, which have the unique texture of handmade paper, we can see plant-like green objects, but it is difficult to identify what they are clearly.

In addition, washi Japanese paper is used as the supporting base for the green substance, and on this paper, a large number of fine short lines have been drawn close together with pencils and pens of various colors, as if to lay the groundwork for the painting before applying the green color. (These details can only be seen if you look at the reverse side of a work.)

The artist does not like to discuss her works at all, but she was heard to make the following brief comment: “By mixing or contrasting inorganic and organic things, I visualize ‘what is there’ for certain, even though it isnot visible.” The rest is left to viewers.

Fumie Onuki’s works may be considered as devices that play the role of doors or windows that exist at the boundaries of “what is there” for certain, although not normally visible.
