2022/3/3
On 25 February, the conferment ceremony for the letter of confirmation of the establishment of the Japan Chair, to be established by the VUB-CSDS (Institute for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy) with the support of the Japanese government, was held at the residence of Ambassador Shimokawa. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Karel De Gucht, President of the Brussels School of Governance (VUB-BSoG), Prof. Luis Simón, Director of the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy (VUB-CSDS) and Ms. Giulia Tercovich, Associate Professor at VUB-CSDS. President De Gucht formally expressed the acceptance of the support by the Japanese government by presenting the letter of acknowledgement issued by the University.
VUB-CSDS has been preparing the establishment of a Japan Chair since 2018 with the aim of leading Japanese studies as well as the dissemination of Japanese policy on the European continent. The establishment of the Japan Chair was made possible in recognition of VUB-CSDS's excellent research and publicity activities in the field of foreign and security policy in Europe and East Asia. This is the first time that a Japan Chair has been established on the Continental Europe.
The establishment of the Japan Chair is expected to promote Japanese studies in Brussels, the hub of the EU and NATO, and to further develop cooperation in security and other fields in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region.
