MIYABI

On the occasion of the 150 years of friendship between the Kingdom of Belgium and the State of Japan, Fondation George Arthur Forrest has the pleasure of inviting you to attend the presentation of Miyabi, by the Kitanodai Gagaku Ensemble. A world first.

Miyabi – elegance and refinement of the imperial court – has been staged by Ado Huygens to give you a greater understanding and to allow you to enjoy these special moments. Singing, music, dance, flower arranging (Ikebana), way of the fragrance (Kô), sumptuous kimonos and precious masks will lead you into the heart of a mysterious and captivating world.

An exceptional, very rare event : share and experience an art formerly reserved only to shintô and Buddhist temples and the emperor.

Concert KODŌ One Earth Tour 2016 : Mystery

The Japanese percussionists of Kodō set the Henry Le Boeuf Hall alight when they first performed there in 2012. Kodō means both "children of the drum" and "heartbeats". On their taiko, traditional drums in various sizes, they beat out furious rhythms, at times in unison, at times with a number of rhythms simultaneously. The combination of these sounds and the precision of their choreography is stunning as they convey a message of harmony and universal peace.

Cinema The God of Ramen

SYNOPSIS:

A ramen shop named “Taishoken” and has 50 years history is known for its endless lines.
The modest shop in the back of an alley was buzzing with activity -- with customers waiting in line, regulars who came to eat and help out on a daily basis and apprentices crammed into the tiny kitchen. The apprentices aren’t there just to learn the secret of his ramen. Without exception, they agree the main reason people flock to Taishoken is “the boss.” They’re all drawn to his unique personality.
But what cameras have shot from 2001 was the darkness of Yamagishi’s heart. It revealed truths that Yamagishi had kept hidden for years. He was carrying a heavy physical and emotional burden. He had locked up memories of his wife, who supported him for 25 of the 50 years he had dedicated to ramen. He suffered from a series of debilitating medical issues that slowly eroded his ability to work. And the death of his wife has come. But still he is in the shop. What drove him to go on making ramen…? We see in the screen a way of life called “Taishoken”...

Until 02/27 Exhibition Yoshie SUGITO - Cutting

In this exhibition ”CUTTING” , Yoshie Sugito uses images from folklore, myth, oral literature to present the transformation and the process of this recomposition. This transformation process finds the relationship between narrativity and dimensionality which are the dormant characteristics of the painting.
Through this repetition and with a primitive and pictorial method of expression, the motives are gradually transformed into symbols.
Her focus is a process of transformation; turning symbolic images into tangible objects.

Theater KYOGEN

Kyogen (literally, “mad words”) are brief plays presented as comic interludes between the somber dramas that make up the traditional program of the Noh theatre.
Because the style and themes of the comic interludes allow them to stand on their own, they are also performed separately from Noh plays. While some Kyogen served to provide the audience with additional information about the main Noh play, others were comical or farcical skits on entirely separate themes, serving to relieve the generally gloomy atmosphere of the Noh.

Cinema Mourning Recipe

SYNOPSIS

Heartbroken Yuriko comes back to her parents’ house after deciding to divorce from her husband, only to find a recipe book for life, left by her late mother Otomi who just passed away. The handwritten and lovingly illustrated recipes concern cooking, cleaning and the basic knowledge of the house keeping techniques. They are to let Yuriko and her father (Otomi’s husband) Ryohei face the life by following the monotony of everyday chores, and take a step forward by the 49th days after her death – the day a memorial service will be held according to Buddhist teaching for the family and friends. With the help from two young strangers, the garishly-dressed Imo and the Japanese-Brazilian Haru, the family slowly begins to rebuild their lives as they learn the life and profound love of Otomi and get ready for the great party on the 49th day as Otomi has wished ...

Commemoration of the East Japan Earthquake 11 March 2011

Almost 5 years have passed since the earthquake disaster of East Japan in 2011. The toll of victims and missing counts 18 457, and adding over 3 000 died in refuge, it goes more than 21 000. Even now, we count about 182 000 refugees (as at December 2015). Their daily life is still under difficult conditions so the people need still support. We would like to be linked with the affected people and hold a charity concert & bazaar to support them.

Atelier Atelier Calligraphie japonaise

Event Manga and Cosplay Festival Spring

Japan is not just about old customs and traditional art forms, as you can discover for yourself during our Manga and Cosplay Festival, which we are now organising for the first time in the spring. These two expressions of modern Japanese pop culture promise a sparkling and colourful spectacle with manga comics and glitzy cosplay performance art with costumes and accessories as a source of inspiration. Students of communication management at the PXL University College will ensure that this spring edition is not a pale copy of the autumn festival. Participants can show their costumes, buy and sell manga comics, attend workshops, etc. The often playful cosplay costumes will also make this festival a delightful occasion for newcomers to the scene.

Event World Tai Chi Day

The interest in tai-chi is growing every year and Limburg is seeing increasing numbers of practitioners. Although this stylised movement art is not of Japanese origin, many practitioners still traditionally come together in the Japanese Garden on World Tai-Chi day. After all, tai-chi fits in perfectly with the atmosphere of peace and meditation that the Japanese Garden exudes. During our event on World Tai-Chi day, enthusiastic practitioners will demonstrate the soft and relaxing movements under the guidance of tai-chi coach Gert Clerckx (Tai Chi & Relaxation). Everybody is welcome to take part, even if you have never practised tai-chi before. Teachers from the whole country will be giving workshops and open sessions the whole day.

Event Koinobori – Children’s Day

Koinobori means Children's day, but also refers to the special kites which will then be hung up in the form of a Koi carp, the symbol of hope, strength and a good future for children. So it will be a special day in the Japanese Garden, in which children take centre stage, although their parents are of course equally welcome. Children can try out all sorts of activities throughout the entire garden: making masks, filling little pots with coloured salt, catching fish, and more. They receive a stamp for each activity. When the card is full, it can be exchanged for a gift. It becomes even more exciting with the 'dragon' which is locked up in its den and released in the evening. Something worth seeing in itself! Although, who knows, the dragon might also burst out during the activities to freak out the visitors...

05/06~12 Theater Toshiki Okada/chelfitsch – Time’s journey through a room

Toshiki Okada is an innovator of form and a key figure in Japanese contemporary theatre. He has repeatedly participated in the Kunstenfestivaldesarts with work that is recognisable by its idiosyncratic vernacular language and astonishing imagery. Okada poses hard-hitting questions about the complexity of the ultramodern post- Fukushima Japanese society. At the same time, his art is universal and timeless. In 2016, he takes part in the festival with the European premiere of Time’s Journey Through a Room. In an ominous huis clos, the protagonists are attempting to cope with the omnipresent ghosts of the past and the latent threat of the present. In the background we hear a multi-layered acoustic landscape of field recordings. Okada creates – as only he can – an enchanting new world where sound, body, and language merge with one another. What remains is essential human theatre and the hope of a better future.

Ikenobo Studygroup Belgium - 25 years

Dance
Takao Kawaguchi – About Kazuo Ohno

Takao Kawaguchi is a dancer and media artist, and a former member of the Japanese collective Dumb Type. He never learned to dance butoh. He never saw a single performance by Kazuo Ohno, the legendary founder of this primordial Japanese ‘dance of darkness’. And yet, that is exactly what he wishes: to become Kazuo Ohno. In About Kazuo Ohno, Kawaguchi wants, insofar as is possible, to copy the dance master, based solely on what has been preserved in old videotapes. Kawaguchi interrogates the memory, sincerity, and originality of the copy. This is both an honouring and a negation of the essence of butoh. Kawaguchi views the dance as an outsider: he throws himself into Ohno’s outward gestures and facial expressions, but his inner world remains closed to him. Still, the body of the dancer and the spirit of the deceased master gradually melt into one fascinating shape. The closer the copy is to the original, the deeper the chasm between the two. A tour de force.

Yudai Kamisato/Okazaki Art Theatre - +51 Avacion, San Borja

In 2016 Yudai Kamisato is coming to Europe for the first time in the context of Kunstenfestivaldesarts. Kamisato is of mixed Japanese-Peruvian descent, and his piece, +51 Aviación, San Borja, refers to the address of his Peruvian grandmother in Lima. It looks back on his move to Japan at an early age, a ‘homeland’ where he had never before been, and on a trip to his South American birthplace when he was older. Kamisato sees the nikkei (Japanese emigrants) as a mirror that shines a light on Japanese society today. In this pseudofictive reportage, he traces an intercultural history across the Pacific Ocean. Like a contemporary Odysseus, the main character wanders into strange places, colourful encounters, and absurd events, until the web closes around his own mixed identity. A discovery.

Come in and fill yourself with the soul of the Japanese culture. “This very mineral garden inspired by Japanese art is all in symbols. If the bamboos represent the force and the maples the grace, the various stones symbolize the islands which compose Japan, while the white quartz path leads you towards the mountains. This miniaturized nature imperceptibly invites you to meditation. This Japanese garden was conceived, drawn and executed out by Marc Knaepen and the technical department of the city of Durbuy.

Sya-butsu (写仏) means copying an image of the Buddha. It is said that concentration on sya-butsu allows us to let go of stray thoughts and to be composed. We will trace over amida-nyorai (阿弥陀如来), one of the images of Buddha, using a Japanese brush pen and Japanese paper.
After sya-butsu, you will be invited as a guest to the tea ceremony, held in the cha-sitsu (茶室), tea ceremony room, which has tatamis. There, you will savour a bowl of light matcha from Kyoto, and enjoy the moment of cha-no-yu in a mood of quiet reflection. * You can sit in the cha-shitsu in either the Japanese way or the Western way.

‘there is only the real’

IBASHO is pleased to invite you to the opening of the duo exhibition of Belgian photographer Sarah van Marcke and Japanese photographer Kumi Oguro. With this exhibition IBASHO explores the relationship between Belgian en Japanese visual culture. The performative series that Van Marcke created in Japan reflects her experiences as a Belgian in Japan. Oguro was born and raised in Japan, but has long since left Japan and built a life in Belgium. She has fully assimilated into Belgian society and visual culture which is reflected in her photography. The works of both artists are staged, fictitious, surreal. However, as Surrealist André Breton has said, 'there is only the real'...

Tea ceremony
Sashiko is a sewing technique that uses traditional geometric pattern stitching. It looks like drawing with thread on the various fabrics. Originally, sashiko was used in Japan to repair holes in clothes, reinforcing them and allowing the scarce fabrics to be used for as long as possible. Sashiko is a simple and easy way to have a feeling of taking care of things. It allows us to express ourselves with familiar materials. After sashiko, you will be invited as a guest to the tea ceremony, held in the cha-sitsu (茶室), tea ceremony room. There, you will savour a bowl of light matcha from Kyoto, and feel the moment of cha-no-yu. Try making an artwork on fabric from your own pattern and enjoy the cha-no-yu moment! * You can sit in the cha-shitsu in either the Japanese way or the Western way.

Concert Tokyo Chutei Iki. 13 saxophonistes barytons japonais inclassables

Be there !

Calligraphie japonaise : De l'écriture à la peinture abstraite

Satoru Toma - photographe, calligraphe

07/23 Theater Rakugo theatre

Rakugo is a form of Japanese entertainment / comedy in which one person, the narrator, is telling a complex comical story, using only a paper fan and a towel, and sitting in the seiza position during the entire performance. The narrator interprets two or more characters, using only voice changes and subtle movements to set down the dramatis personae. Sometimes, the term ‘sit down-comedy’ is used for this art form.

07/29 Theater Rakugo theatre and Japanese dinner

The rakugo master Ichinosuke Shunputei is on a European tour for the 150th anniversary of the belgo-japanese relationship. You will discover this demanding art that requires a vocal technique, a rhythm control, face expression and mime. Words are essential but the way the actor plays is so impressive! He has to play all the roles and make them recognizable only with the moves of his body, his head and a fan or a tissue. This time there will be a French subtitles and some explanations. It will be a rare occasion to discover this art.

Event Origami for Peace

According to an old Japanese story, you can recover from the worst diseases if you can fold 1,000 cranes. After the atomic bomb on Hiroshima this story acquired another dimension: a girl who suffered from radiation disease took the legend literally, hoping for healing and peace for all child victims. Since then cranes, origami and wishes for peace have been closely linked. So, the Japanese Garden every year commemorates the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 with a crane-folding Origami contest.

A friendship is born many years ago between 5 persons who would have nothing in common outside of their practice. They discovered that, they were having activities inspired by the Japanese culture or following the path of traditional Japanese crafts. To celebrate the 150th year anniversary of friendship between Japan and Belgium and the 15th edition of the Iaido Summer Seminar, they decided to share their passion through an exhibition of the best pieces of their work. Three of them have produced for this occasion 4 knives that are going to be shown for the first time.

The seasons of Yasujiro Ozu
Unlike the epic overtones of a Kurosawa or the jagged alloy of violence and poetry of a Mizoguchi, Yasujiro Ozu has spent more time trying to reach out to Western film lovers.
Imbued with a delicate sensibility, his intimate stories hone in on everyday details, swathed in the atmospheres of different seasons, rather than on intrigue. Restored versions.

Exhibition Manga Hokusai Manga:
Approaching the Master’s Compendium from the Perspective of Contemporary Comics
JICC EVENT

In light of Japan’s contemporary comics and their global proliferation, the 19th-century Hokusai Manga is attracting increasing interest. Fans worldwide tend to even regard this pictorialcompendium by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai as the origin of today’s manga. But the outward appearance of these two types of manga does not immediately suggest a continuous tradition. Do present-day graphic narratives and the master’s “diverse drawings” share anything other than a name? Unlike past exhibitions of Hokusai’s work, Manga Hokusai Manga approaches the Hokusai Manga from the perspective of contemporary Japanese comics, focusing on genre, pictorial storytelling and participatory culture rather than the integration of word and image or the role of popular characters. And instead of aiming at a historiographic verification of influences, the exhibition invites viewers to ponder their own notions about manga by comparing works from different periods while exploring the diversity therein.

Event Kikumatsuri Chrysanthemum Festival

For us in the West, Chrysanthemums are especially reminiscent of funerals or commemorations in the cemetery, but in the Far East these flowers are a symbol of happiness. The chrysanthemum or kiku is even the symbol of the Japanese emperor! A great reason therefore to organize a festival or matsuri around this surprisingly versatile flower and to make the garden a very special eye-catcher. In 2016 the Hasselt chrysanthemum festival will be jointly supported and coordinated by Tomas de Bruyne. He deputed in Japan and is now famous all over the world for his flower designs. His work was also highly praised at the Floraliën in Ghent this year, in the cathedral.

On October 2, there is a Performance of Sakura 5 and brass band of the Japanese school in Brussels. They will sing inside of the new pavilion of the Garden. Afterwards, the brass band of the Japanese School of Brussels will do their performance in the Garden as well. A group of around 30 children will liven up the Garden with their beautiful music.

On October 8, there is a performance of Ako+Taka:
The Japanese duo Ako+Taka lives in Paris and will visit the Japanese Garden on the second Saturday of the Chrysanthemum Festival. They will have an accordion performance in the Garden and play for this occasion famous Flemish songs

At last on October 9, there is Noh Day with Noboru Katsumi: Noboru Katsumi is a Noh performer and teacher. He is linked to the famous Waseda University in Tokyo. On the last day of the Chrysanthemum Festival, he will give a brief explanation about Noh and he will also perform three Noh pieces of twenty minutes each.

Exhibition Maiko no hikari (Geisha apprentices from Kyoto)
by Régis Defurnaux
JICC EVENT

Maiko no hikari is a photographic exhibition on Geisha apprentices from Kyoto, the Maiko. Prisoners of stereotypes linked to the world of prostitution, used by the touristic industry, the pictures from Régis Defurnaux intends to show these young artists from a different and unusual perspective. Actually, these women perpetuate old artistic practices (dancing, singing, recitations, playing instruments, tea ceremony, etc.) all linked to the cycle of seasons and the world of flowers. They even bring us back to the animistic origins of Japan, while directly connecting with courtesan art, kabuki theater and propitiatory dances from agricultural traditions. Living art form, they are at the forefront of Japanese femininity as they interact with women as a model of independence in a rapidly changing gender issues. Way beyond the simplistic opposition between tradition and modernity, they search for a different life within Arts.

Exhibition Made in Japan

The exhibition ‘Made in Japan’ takes its start in the 1950s and is dedicated to post-war Japan and its avant-garde by taking a closer look to some of the major movements and artists involved. A selection of works from the collection of S.M.A.K. Museum in Ghent (our partner since 2013) will be brought together with loans from private collections to form a historical presentation that will map the artistic ideas of the time. Special focus is on Gutai and intersections with European and American art. Besides we a number of artists from different generations who are (still) working and have a link to Japan were invited to show (new) work. Cultural Center Strombeek is a vivid center for arts and culture, based in the immediate vicinity of Brussels and within walking distance of the 1958 World Fair site and Atomium.

Theatre 2016 Noh Theatre Performance
Aoi no Ue (Lady Aoi)

This drama involves various devices to nurture the atmosphere of the Tale of Genji. The climax of utai in the first half of the drama includes names of the chapters of the Tale of Genji. Also, in the Muromachi era people felt that the direct cause of Lady Rokujo's jealous struggle with Lady Aoi was that she lost the fight for precedence for her carriage against Lady Aoi at the Kamo Festival. Following this interpretation, Lady Rokujo enters the stage riding on a broken carriage in the first half of the drama.

Cinema “Jirokichi the Rat” (Oatsurae Jirokichi Koshi 御誂治郎吉格子, 1931, Dir. Itō Daisuke), accompanied by benshi (film narrator) Kataoka Ichirō (Japanese, English subtitles)

The real stars of the Japanese silent movie era were the benshi, the film narrators, explaining the film and performing all rolls in their own particular interpretation. Often the benshi were so popular that filmgoers did decide on the film they would watch because of the benshi and not because of the film itself. In this case, both, the benshi, Kataoka Ichirō, and the film 1931 hit Jirokichi the Rat certainly will be a great, unforgettable experience. Mr. Kataoka is one of the only professional benshi and a disciple of the Sawato Midori, who herself was trained by Matsuda Shunsai, who is called the last active benshi of the silent movie area. Mr. Kataoka has performed in the USA, in the UK and in many countries of Europe. After a very successful debut in Leuven in last December he will be in Belgium only for his third time. Recently he has also performed in prestigious Kabikuza theater in Tokyo as part of the Tokyo International Film Festival together with famed kabuki actor Onoe Kikunosuke, reminding the contemporary audience of the collaboration of kabuki theater and silent film during its early years. The 1931 film Jirokichi the Rat, based on a popular novel by Yoshikawa Eiji, is situated in the late Edo-period, so in the early 19th century, and is the story of a master-thief depicted by the famous silent movie star Ōkōchi Denjirō, who falls in love while constantly being chased by the authorities. The film, released on New Year’s Eve, was praised for its masterful camera, its creative use of captions and Ōkōchi‘s acting. It is also the only silent film directed by Itō Daisuke completely preserved. The film and the tradition of the benshi will be introduced by Prof. Dr. Jan Schmidt (KU Leuven, Modern history of Japan). After the film there will be the opportunity to meet Mr. Kataoka at the STUK Café nearby.

Concert YOSHIDA BROTHERS Concert Tsugaru shamisen

Ryoichiro Yoshida: born 1977
Kenichi Yoshida: born 1979

The Yoshida Brothers were born and bred in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido. Each picked up the shamisen at the tender age of five, and began studying Tsugaru shamisen under Takashi Sasaki I in 1990. After sweeping prizes at national Tsugaru shamisen conventions, the brothers made their major debut in 1999. The debut album sold over 100,000 copies, which is an extraordinary figure for a traditional folk music release.
They won the "Traditional Japanese Music Album Of The Year" category of the 15th annual Japan Gold Disc Award, as well as the "30th Anniversary Of Normalization Of Japan-China Diplomatic Relations Commemorative Special Prize" of the 17th Annual Japan Gold Disc Award.
2014 marked the 15th year anniversary of the Yoshida Brothers debut in Japan. To celebrate they released the new studio album HORIZON. In 2015, they recorded the theme song for the Japanese manga Naruto that has sold over one hundred million copies.
As one of the artistic groups whose scope of activities go way beyond that of traditional Japanese music, the Yoshida Brothers continue to take not only Japan but also US, Europe, and Asia their stage.
