Until 03/22 Exhibition Look What Happened to Japanese Prints
Look what happened to Japanese Prints Forty-three woodblock prints by the internationally recognized artists HASEGAWA Yuichi, TAMEKANE Yoshikatsu, GOTO Hidehiko. Their works are included in many major museums collections around the world. The exhibition will as well display an explanation of the usage of the ‘Baren’, a tool used in the woodblock print technique. In this unique collaboration with the Tolman Collection in Tokyo; TAG bxl has the honour to present this special woodblock print exhibition. Look what happened to Japanese Prints is about unlocking existing clichés on Japanese prints. The goal of the exhibition is to show European audiences the level to which Japanese art has risen since long gone days of ukiyo-e* (often depicting Japanese traditional images of samurais and geishas) which surely many people have in mind thinking about Japanese art.

Lecture The EU-Japan Relationship
Functioning & Future of the EU’s Strategic Partnerships

By Herman Van Rompuy
Former President of the European Council
Former Prime Minister of Belgium

The EU and Japan have one of the most important trade relationships in the world. The EU-Japan relationship is also one of the oldest strategic partnership the EU has come to entertain with third parties. Launched in 1991, the political dialogue between both parties has led to them co-operating extensively in bilateral and multilateral contexts on a range of global governance issues. In continuation of this long-term and deep-seated partnership, the EU and Japan have confirmed the next EU-Japan Summit to be held in Tokyo on May 29th 2015.

Nevertheless, the relationship is widely acknowledged to have significant untapped potential. Accordingly, Japan and the European Union launched formal negations towards the conclusion of a new partnership agreement covering both a free trade and political cooperation chapter. Formal negotiations started a little under two-years ago in May 2013 under the auspices of H. Van Rompuy, the then President of the European Council. Following 6 negotiation rounds, contacts between both parties have depend and the scope of their dialogue widened. If negotiations are still ongoing, the process itself has marked a new stage in the relationship between these two civilian powers. As such, EU-Japan negotiations are remarkable both because of the sheer size of the economies involved, as well as what their ongoing negotiations signify for the EU’s wider foreign policy agenda with regards to its Strategic Partnerships.

To explore some of these issues implicit in the EU-Japan Partnership, the organizers have seized upon the publication of an edited volume on “The European Union and Japan - A New Chapter in Civilian Power Cooperation?” to convene a series of expert and practitioners able to offer some valuable insights, either through their own experience or accomplished research.

Until 05/24 Exhibition Wabi Sabi Shima

EXHIBITION
An invitation to 30 contemporary artists on about the exchanges between Europe and Japan through the lens of wabi-sabi.

A fertile terrain for investigation, Japanese never ceases to fascinate in its specificities. Wabi-sabi is the very essence of Japanese beauty, and a concept that illustrates key notions in Japanese aesthetics: wabi represents refinement through simplicity, while sabi explores the process of weathering over time, and shima is the Japanese term for island. The exhibition takes us into the heart of a culture that celebrates wear, chance, refinement, and nature without eschewing politics, collective memory, terrestrial violence or the realities of the present day.

Course Create your Furoshiki during Home and Away Tôkyo Event of Mons2015

Furoshiki designates a traditional Japanese method of wrapping cloth used to carry clothes, gifts or bentô lunch boxes. The tradition is thought to date back to the Nara era (710-794). The furoshiki wrapping method gradually fell into disuse after 1945, mainly because of the introduction of plastic bags. From an environmental and ecological perspective, furoshiki is nevertheless one of the prettiest and most convenient alternatives to the plastic bag.

In the run-up to the Tokyo Home and Away week, two comic strip authors, Aurélie Bévière and Damien Meerschaut, visited schools in Mons and the Borinage to run a cartoon/manga workshop. The children each made at least one page of cartoons featuring the encounter between the folklore of Mons and Tokyo in the form of the traditions of the Doudou or Ducasse and the dance of the Golden Dragon. They are happy and proud to present these pages today.

Lecture HATSUNE MIKU - The Metamorphasis of Music and Technology

This October, the Japan Foundation and Embassy of Japan in Belgium will present an evening exploring the musical phenomenon of Hatsune Miku, Japan’s most iconic and globally-recognised singer. Featuring in over 500,000 songs worldwide and appearing in some 170,000 uploaded YouTube music videos, what separates Miku from her contemporaries is that she is in fact a ‘virtual’ singer and the face of the music software created by Crypton Future Media, software anyone can buy and use to make her music. As character “singing” through vocal synthesizer technology, Hatsune Miku became a huge hit since the software’s launch in 2007 and inspired collaborations as diverse as Lady Gaga and Pharrell Williams. With Miku’s popularity continuing to skyrocket, she continues to change the course of music production, paving a new way for the future of pop music.

Exhibition The Spirit of Budo - The History of Japan's Martial Arts

The Japan Foundation Touring Exhibition

This exhibition consists of two parts: in the first part, reproductions/originals of historical weapons such as bows and arrows, suits of armor, helmets, and so on are shown, and the development and changes of Japanese martial arts from 8th century to 19th century are explained. Many of ancient types of armor and weapons have not survived to the present or are too fragile for international transport. That is why we decided to include reproductions, which would give the appearance of suits of armor and helmets at the time of original production even more vividly.

The second part deals with the reorganization of bujutsu to budo in the 19th and 20th centuries, and how spirit of martial arts is still inherent in the daily how spirit of martial arts is still inherent in the daily life of Japanese people today. Nine budo associations are also introduced and the clothes and implements such as bamboo swords, protectors, bows and arrows, and so on, which are used by players and students in the present day, are also to be seen.
