Japón, a film by Carlos Reygadas

A man of the city finds a refuge in an old woman house in the Mexicans moutains, to prepare his death. On contact with the nature, his senses will rise up until he reaches the apogee of the emotion. A minimalist first movie, close to Tarkovsky’s cinema.

Exhibition
Solo exhibition Naoyuki Ogino

With pleasure IBASHO presents a solo exhibition of the Japanese photographer Naoyuki Ogino.

IBASHO will show works from Ogino’s black-and-white series 'Womb of the Myth' from 2010/2011. This series was photographed on the site of the movie studio at Uzumasa Kyoto, Japan, which is one of the last places where the practice of traditional Japanese movie craftsmen remains. The recurrent construction and destruction - birth and delivery - of movie sets in the womb of the studio over a period of 60 years, has become a kind of simulacrum; the atmosphere of the place is filled with the ancient Japanese past, gods and future.

Ogino’s most recent works created with photography’s oldest printing technique, the salt print, on thin Japanese washi paper, can be admired as well. The salt prints on show derive from different series, among others from Ogino’s series ‘Skin’ from 2015. With this series he has tried to visualise not only a feeling of presence of a female body, like a breath felt on their skin, but also a materiality through a rich texture in the print that touches the viewer directly and deeply. His other salt prints reveal the deep relationship Ogino has with the Japanese mystical traditions and religions, his images often airing an evanescent world.

Authors’ talk over two novels on Japan at La Licorne bookshop

Two Belgian writers will present their novels at La Licorne, both over Japan. The first novel is called “Mr Origami” (Jean-Marc Ceci, Gallimard) and tells the story of an old Japanese man living in Toscane and practicing Origami art. His quiet and remote life is disturbed by the arrival of a young man. Jean-Marc Ceci has a deep and spare writing style. His novels reads as a tale.
The second book, “Le modèle” (Manuel Capouet, Diagonale) goes over a young Belgian student living in Tokyo and making a pH.D. thesis over climate modeling. Manuel Capouet offers the reader an humorous story over cultural differences and a glimpse on the foreigners community living in Tokyo.
The talk will be held in French.

Gagaku

Budo
Gagaku & Budo - Japanese Court Music and Martial Arts

Gagaku, traditional court music, which has a melody that transports the audience to the ancient times of mythology, is said to be the oldest living form of orchestral music in the world. Traditional drums, flutes and other wind instruments accompany songs and dances. Being protected by the Imperial court, Gagaku was also played in major Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in homage to divinities who are purportedly entertained by the performance. The priests and the Miko, maidens serving the shrine, will unveil its spiritual significance.

Budo, with its spirituality directly inherited from the indigenous religion Shinto, will be represented by two Japanese traditional martial arts: Aikido and Kenjutsu, the art of the sword. The performance will thus provide the audience an excellent opportunity to discover the Shinto spirit in Budo. The performers will be masters from Meiji Jingu together with European amateurs who experienced the training course at Shiseikan, the dojo of Meiji Jingu.

Gagaku and Budo both represent the distillation of the Japanese spirit, which has been cultivated over countless generations. Thus, Meiji Jingu offers a rare opportunity to see two of them together in the same event. It is a unique occasion to be initiated into Japanese culture and its spirit.

Exhibition Exhibition OTANI NIEUWENHUIZE

With pleasure IBASHO announces the solo exhibition of OTANI NIEUWENHUIZE, a new collaboration of Japanese photographer Shinji Otani (1972) and Dutch photographer Johan Nieuwenhuize (1980). Shinji Otani and Johan Nieuwenhuize recognise a similar state of mind in each other’s work. They share a large overlap in working methods, but their concepts and fascinations differ a lot. Both lens-based artists walk the city and take their images instinctively and continuously. Both work from their own image archive and combine images made in different cities and from different periods. Otani works from a documentary perspective, Nieuwenhuize deals with his subject in an abstract manner.

The transactive memory theory shows us that people working in duo’s or groups build up a larger collective memory than do two individuals. When two friends walk a city they remember things selectively, subconsciously depending on the other to remember the other things for them. Shinji Otani and Johan Nieuwenhuize investigate the collective memory developing between the two of them, when they photograph the same subject at the same day.

With their project OTANI NIEUWENHUIZE, the artists look into Japanese and Dutch culture and into cultural tourism. Behaving as tourists themselves they photograph places where culture is being “consumed”. In the Netherlands they visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and De Efteling in Kaatsheuvel. In Japan they visited theme park Huis ten Bosch, the historic site of the former Dutch trading post Dejima, both in Nagasaki, and the shrines of Dazaifu Tenman-gū in Dazaifu on Kyushu.

Event Opening weekend Yokoso Festival – 25 years Japanese Garden

From Saturday (March 4th) at 12am, the Japanese Garden will be open for the public.

Why so much earlier than usual? Well, the Japanese Garden will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2017! To celebrate, the city of Hasselt will bring the Japanese culture outside of the Garden to other cultural institutions. During the first opening weekend, you will immediately be immersed in the Japanese atmosphere by various kamishibai in the city center, which are little Japanese narrative theatres on a bicycle. Also in the Municipal Library in Kuringen you’ll be able to enjoy this narrative technique.

What else is there to do in the first weekend? To master the Japanese culture, you can visit the exhibition of the Fashion Museum 'Across Japan' which focuses on the influence that Japanese fashion has had on Western fashion in the last 30 years. Combine with the 'Cranes and cherry blossoms’ exhibition in the Literary Museum to also have a good overview of Eastern influences in Western picture books.

Concert Baleine 3000

Despite a discography that has only seen an EP and a compilation on Sonig, the sound that unorthodox rap trio Baleine 3000 has engendered is entirely unplaceable. One look at their impossibly eclectic roster—which brings together Japanese MC Illreme, Belgian producer Lawrence Le Doux, and French DJ Afrojaws—will shed some light on how this comes about. As they explain, the cross-continental relationship came about by change after Le Doux stumbled upon Jun Kamoda's Illreme project when looking for a Japanese rapper in the late 2000s. Years later, Afrojaws joins the fold to compile seven tracks on The Nap, their latest offering.

A daughter publicly quizzes her father while dancing with him on stage. Asks him if he’s proud of her, why he vomits when he’s had a drink, why he lives at all. Concert Shinya Sugimoto

Shinya Sugimoto is a composer, pianist and improviser based in Osaka, Japan. He alchemizes samples and improvisational piano phrases into a slow moving polyphonic texture, creating beautifully catastrophic soundscapes. Although largely based on contemporary classical music, his style crosses over immensely broad fields such as Hip Hop and Free jazz. He started his performing career in Brooklyn, New York in 2009. Since then he has been featured worldwide in concerts, art exhibitions, films, and numerous recording projects both as a solo artist and a collaborator. Making his debut solo live performance at ISSUE Project Room, he has shared the stage with improvisors such as Jeremy Young (Sontag Shogun), Andy Couzens, Jerry Gordon, Yangjah Shin, Trever Hagen, Kou Yamamoto (Nous), Alexandre Maubert, Ally Mobbs, sleepland, Keiko Uenishi (o.blaat), Jeremy D. Slater and Kenya Kawaguchi. In 2010 New York Fashion Week, Sugimoto collaborated with Asher Levine, composing music for his runway show. Sugimoto also composed film scores for several independent films with collaborators including multi-award-winning Thai filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong. He has released two solo albums and a few collaborative albums from his own label MONKHAUS.

Joris Posthumus met a Japanese saxophonist Yuichiro Tokuda during a tour in China. They quickly became friends and Yuichiro invited Joris for a tour in Japan. Back in the Netherlands Joris started composing new songs, inspired by his Japanese trip and musical encounters there. April 2015 Joris invited Yuichiro to join him for a small club tour in Holland and Belgium. This was a good way to test out some of the new tunes, from the new album « Tokyo’s Bad Boys ».

Casper Faassen - Fleeting Images

IBASHO is proud to present an exhibition of photographic works by the Dutch artist Casper Faassen (1975). The exhibition includes several works in which Faassen combines photography, painting and Japanese culture, illustrating the transience of worldly existence.

In parallel with the Japan museum Sieboldhuis in the Netherlands, where Faassen exhibits until June 4th, IBASHO presents Faassen’s new series inspired by the elegance of Japanese culture and brevity of Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e). The results are beautiful, melancholic images featuring recurring motifs from Japanese culture. Fleeting Images presents us with the image of Japanese women in luxury kimonos, swirling snowflakes and displays of cherry blossoms.

The pieces in this exhibition are constructed from different layers of photographic and painted art. By combining photography with painted layers, Faassen could be described as either a photographing painter or a painting photographer. In his work, the transience of worldly existence is expressed by the disappearance of images and is heightened by the addition of a layer of craquelure. This emphasises the contrast between the beauty of the images and the inevitability of decay. They are introverted images, not entirely visible, like a memory or a dream.

The exhibition will also show ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa Kunisada and Utagawa Kuniyoshi from the 19th century that have inspired Faassen in creating Fleeting Images.

Vernissage on 26 March 2-6 p.m.

Across Japan

Throughout the years Japanese fashion has become a strong brand. Today, it is setting the tone for fashion trends worldwide, in streetwear as well as couture. A very important turning point was marked by the collections of Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo presented in Paris at the beginning of the eighties. With their ragged, loose-fitting, ripped black garments they shook up the clothing industry and introduced a radically new concept of fashion. From then on, the West turned its eyes to everything Japanese and picked up an age-old intercultural dialogue.

The fascinating innovations introduced by the Japanese avant-garde designers and their younger peers in combination with newer Western interpretations of the ‘Japanese’ aesthetics make up the core of Across Japan. At the same time, the show seeks to illustrate that this concern with Japan in the West is nothing new and has a long tradition going back to the seventeenth century. In Across Japan this unique cross-fertilization between Japanese and Western fashion is explored through a set of themes and a selection of noteworthy silhouettes supplemented with visuals aiming at pinpointing the peculiar nature of it.

The exhibition examines men’s and women’s wear. Designers and fashion houses represented are amongst others Paul Poiret, Balenciaga, Rudi Gernreich, Hanae Mori, Kenzo Takada, Issey Miyake, Kansai Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, Junya Watanabe, Maison Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester et Iris van Herpen.

The exhibition is part of the Yokoso Festival – 25 Years Japanese Garden in Hasselt.

“It's next to impossible to describe their sound, because — by design — it rarely follows consistent patterns". Some of their music has been described as having "a majestic ebb and flow that suggests natural wonders" or a "witchy, tribal side". Either way, at any one time it may incorporate chanting and punchy drums, dance polyrhythms atonal composition or psychedelia. When you transform improvisation into a song that people can listen to, it is difficult to recreate the initial improvisation each time because you have to play in a different time and space. In order to utilize the initial impulse of improvisation, we restructure improvisation into songs. Once the song is structured, it is no longer improvisation.

Mono no Aware + Yakuza

New exhibition by photographer Anton Kusters.
Mono no aware is a Japanese term used to describe an awareness of the passing moments of life.
Like when you're driving and the sun sets over the vast fields around you and the music's just right and the warm wind in your hair and your friends next to you and conversations go quiet and the long winding road ahead and your mind goes blank and you find yourself staring into the distance and then you snap out of it, everyone knowing you've all had – but can't keep – that moment that just passed.
There are many more examples of these kind of moments... We all know them. But we never know when they pop up. They stop time for us for just a second... and then we know we must move on.

Yakuza
YAKUZA is a personal visual account of the life inside an inaccessible subculture: a traditional Japanese crime family that controls the streets of Kabukicho, in the heart of Tokyo, Japan.
Through 10 months of negotiations with the Shinseikai, my brother Malik and I became one of the only westerners ever to be granted this kind of access to the closed world of Japanese organised crime.
I share their complex relationship to Japanese society, and show the personal struggle of being forced to live in two different worlds at the same time; worlds that often have conflicting morals and values.
It turns out not to be a simple 'black' versus 'white' relationship, but most definitely one with many shades of grey.

Motohiro Takeda

With pleasure IBASHO announces a solo exhibition of the Japanese photographer Motohiro Takeda. Takeda’s forte lies in camera-less photography.

When studying at Parsons, The New School For Design in New York, Takeda became fascinated by the camera obscura and the idea of being inside the camera. He turned his bedroom into a camera obscura by blocking all the windows with black plastic sheets, making a pinhole in the plastic and started living in this camera obscura. As he spent more and more time in the camera, he started to understand what it was and what it meant for him to be there. Then, he gradually started making the body of work ‘Invitation’, consisting of self-portraits on multiple sheets of chromogenic paper, resulting in very large orange/red coloured unique works of 2.5 x 2.5 meters. Exposure time sometimes lasted for a couple of hours. The orange/red colour is the colour of the sunlight as registered by the chromogenic paper and white silhouettes represent the force of life presented in the human shape.

His series ‘Another Sun’ was the result of a discovery by Takeda of an accidental registration of the sun on the photographic paper hanging in his apartment. He realised he wanted to create a series around the source of the creation of his large portraits, following the cycle of the seasons. This series reflects the changes in nature as well as the changes in Takeda’s personal life. Works from this series can be seen at Takeda’s exhibition at IBASHO.

‘Blink/Matataki’ is Takeda’s latest series on show at IBASHO in which he has used curtains or veils to deepen his concept of the camera obscura. To Takeda the camera obscura is a metaphor of our perception and how we see the outside world and process it with our mind and consciousness. The pinhole or the window is the eye that serves as a passage of light to look out the world outside and at the same time, bring them into one’s inner space. In this series of work, the existence of the two spaces which merge and separate simultaneously and seamlessly to each other are symbolised by the ghosty image of the curtains. Curtain is a metaphor of the eyelids which veils and unveils the world in front of you. As a whole, this series is meant to provide the viewers with a sensation of Matataki, which means ‘a flickering of bright lights’ in Japanese that will be burnt into the back of their eyelids.

Takeda’s body of work was created in a camera obscura. Many of them are a unique print as they were directly exposed by the sun light in a room on a light sensitive paper. Some are contact printed from original paper negatives and some are photographed with a camera. They all possess the “natural magic” inherited from the time that photography was invented.

From performance to improvised music and exhibition, the Japanese artist Tetsuya Umeda works with different disciplines and contexts. Using everyday objects and simple physical phenomena, often involving sound and light, he creates spatiotemporal devices that he deploys by making them enter into dialogue with their environment – architecture, the urban space, the movement of spectators… Composite is a journey of visual and sensorial micro-happenings that brings together around thirty people from Brussels of different ages. They are invited to move along defined trajectories while singing a children’s nursery rhyme in a loop. The rhythm is repeated, again and again and again. Little by little, glides, translations and juxtapositions take effect, both sonic and spatial. A composition of sounds, movements and bodies emerge, become amplified and then fade. The project comes full circle with a final performance that presents all actions in one space. Tetsuya Umeda shapes live an organic, fragile and moving sculpture. Honing the senses, summoning empathetic attention for the other person, he makes tangible a human microcosm in search of harmony.

NENDO

Following its debut exhibition in 2003, the nendo phenomenon has developed at an astounding pace. Under the guidance of Oki Sato, the Japanese collective has continued to impress us through the coherence and power of its vocabulary, its design that is imbued with simple, Japanese lines and given a twist not devoid of humour. Weather it is creating furniture, objects, accessories, eating utensils or interiors and architectures, nendo responds to the most broad-ranging projects with the same natural rigour, charged with enormous inherent poetry.

Now aged 39, Oki Sato has enthusiastically accepted the CID’s invitation and for four months will take over all the interior spaces: stables, the hay store, atrium, lamps storage room… His exhibition will form an exclusive creation, devised in close relationship with the location.

This will be a European premiere on such a scale.

AFRIRAMPO

After six years since their breakup in 2010, Osaka's female rock duo Afrirampo is back! They have established a global reputation with their music mixed with primitive sounds bound up with mind-blowing performance. ONI (Vocal / Guitar) and PIKA (Vocal / Drum) have been active pursuing their solo career after their split, and now they are back together to make a return.

Their music mixed with primitive sound, bound up with mind-blowing performance, have created an international stir. In 2003, they launched their debut album "A", followed by few albums including "URUSA IN JAPAN" from Sony's imprint Ki/oon Records in 2005. They announced to split in 2010, and in the year after, an album "NEVER ENDING AFRIRAMPO"(a CD/DVD set, Ki/oon Records) containing a live recording from their final show was released. In March 2016, after six years since their break-up, they are back together to present the newborn Afrirampo.

The work of Chihiro Kondo is currently characterised by the moving tensions between two worlds. The relation between Japanse and Western art is of central importance to Chihiro Kondo's work. The Haiku’s that accompany Kondo's work, try to capture this relation by reconciliating a Western style with Japanese art.

Kikagaku Moyo

Initiation à la calligraphie japonaise - SHO DO

Origami for Peace

According to an old Japanese story, you can recover from the worst diseases if you can fold 1,000 cranes. After the atomic bomb on Hiroshima this story acquired another dimension: a girl who suffered from radiation disease took the legend literally, hoping for healing and peace for all child victims. Since then cranes, origami and wishes for peace have been closely linked. So, the Japanese Garden every year commemorates the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 with a crane-folding Origami contest.

A photo exhibition by Mr. Francesco Serafini.

Opening 29/8/17 at 18.00

Are you searching for the last pieces of “natural” landscapes in and around the big area of Hasselt? You will see the works photographed by students of the Hasselt Municipal Academy of Art as small intimate pieces of nature, with a blow to Japanese woodcut art.
These images are confronted with the apparently “artificial” Japanese Garden and can be viewed in the okando (pavilion with glass all around, in the cherry park.

Atelier origami

Event Sake Tastings

Hasselt City cooperated with its sister city Itami since 1985. The Japanese Garden exists as result of this sister relationship. Itami is famous for its sake brewery “Konishi Brewery”. Recently they distribute their sake via Het Anker in Mechelen ( from Golden Carolus). Hasselt City seized this opportunity with both hands to bring this sake to the Japanese Garden. Therefore the Japanese Garden organizes sake tastings for its visitors to apprise the tastes of Itami.

Business Seminar: Belgium-Japan Cross-cultural Business Communication

Cross-cultural communication is important for any company that has a diverse workforce or plans on conducting global business - it involves an understanding of how people from different cultures speak, communicate, and perceive the world around them.
Language differences, high-context vs. low-context cultures, nonverbal differences, and power distance are major factors that can affect cross-cultural communication. Come join us to discover and learn from the joyful/painful/wonderful insights and stories from the expert business community in how this cross-cultural understanding takes shape in business situations.
Take away from this seminar some practical insights of how to behave better or how better not to behave in a Belgian-Japanese business setting.
This business seminar is in support of the YES Program, Export Program to Japan under the auspices of HM King Philippe of Belgium.
