XL Travelogue, XS Manifestos: Meditations on Tokyo
This event is co-organised with the Embassy. The ‘XL Travelogue, XS Manifestos: Meditations On Tokyo’–exhibition presented by Shai Ben Ami and Charles Weinberg showcases a visual travelogue created in the frame of the Bezalel Academy–Tokyo course led by Dr. Erez Golani Solomon, Asaf Bivas and Keigo Kobayashi. The visual travelogue conducted during the summer of 2016 continues the tradition of ‘pedagogic journeys’. They are set within the context of the aristocratic journeys in classical Europe, the legacy of the ‘Grand Tour’, Bruno Taut’s journey in Japan and the exploratory journey of Colin Rowe in Italy. Alongside these is the adventurous journey of Philip Fogg around the world and the present calculated journeys led by ‘Expedia tourists’ throughout cities of the world. 15:00-17:00 Monday 15 January 2018 *** Reservation required *** Please click here to register for free. |

Ryoko Sekiguchi, writer Trami Nguyen, musician, visual art and performer Sugio Yamaguchi, chef Listen to the voice, the music and the sound of the food you bite under your teeth. Just as one never hears one’s own voice resonating in the body, when we eat food, the noise we make belongs to our “internal sounds”. And what if all these sounds internal and external, unified to create a space-time? These three acts (voice, music, sounds of mouth) rarely associated, are woven and screened so that the public is ultimately awaken to the act of “listening.” This performance-reading combines the voice of the Japanese writer Ryoko Sekiguchi, the original dishes of Chef Sugio Yamaguchi and the music of Trami Nguyen played on an Erard piano in the salon of the Hotel Max Hallet. | Hotel Max Hallet Avenue Louise 346 1000 Bruxelles |

Emi Kodama, multidisciplinary artist Claude Ledoux, composer Ensemble LAPS, collective of musicians The space of a house extends to everyday reality as well as in our imagination. Can Art Nouveau have a similar design to a Japanese house in the composition of space? Emi Kodama, multidisciplinary artist, and the composer Claude Ledoux accompanied by his LAPS ensemble, will invite the public to a performance-walk in the many rooms of The Maison Langbehn, a kind of guide to explore imaginary landscapes. The way a guide navigates the landscape and an architect creates it will guide your spirit. In this performance we will compare how the physical space completes the mental space. Emi Kodama leads this new way of visiting a house by being both a hiking guide and a landscape architect. “A nature guide remembers his way by associating things he sees during his hike to elements of everyday life. He describes the walk in a meadow as a living room. A landscape architect designs a city garden to make you feel as if you were surrounded by nature. He plants a row of trees to block the view of a building. “ (Emi Kodama) | Maison Langbehn Rue Renkin 90 1030 Schaerbeek |

Hiroyuki Nakajima, calligraphy Vincenzo Casale, historical clarinet Jan Michiels, piano Bechstein 1890 Antoine Pecqueur, texts Japanese calligraphy has influenced and continues to influence Western art, from music to painting and many other arts forms. It takes many years of practice to master Japanese calligraphy, and the immediacy of the gesture of writing makes it an art where the creative and performative gesture is very close. Western music and some musical instruments such as the bass clarinet from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, in the Japanese period, seem to be inspired by this art thanks to their design and the immanence of their artistic form. The sound which sometimes seems to have a cruder gesture than that of calligraphy, on the other hand has a preparation and a similar mastery. If for Paul Klee, the line is a point that has gone for a walk, the walk of a brush in calligraphy could be a sensory journey beyond the boundaries of the image itself. Can we translate a sound into calligraphy and vice versa? The performance at Villa Cavrois will present a program which combines the calligraphic and musical gesture with the architecture of Robert Mallet-Stevens as part of the performance ritual. If architecture is defined as mute music by Goethe, then the architecture will be sculpted here as a sound calligraphy. | Villa Cavrois 60 Avenue John Fitzgerald Kennedy 59170 Croix, France |
