Saburo Teshigawara - Broken Lights

Dancer of the extreme, total creator, host of the greatest scenes, Saburo Teshigawara has renewed the contemporary choreography.
In 2014, he created Broken Lights for the Rhurtriennale, in a frontal setting that leaves him unsatisfied. He fell in love with Les Halles and wanted to recreate the room specifically for the space. In this poem of light for virtuoso bodies, danced on broken glass floor, he is accompanied by an artist without equal: Rihoko Sato. An event not to be missed.

Nihonga, Japanese painting

The process is that of a painting with water and uses all-natural materials: wood, paper, rock, sand, bone. It shares its origins with the technique of fresco, since it proceeds to the base of the same natural pigments, metal oxides and crushed earth or shells. The pigments are crushed with animal glue prepared by the painter for the work, as and when it is created. In addition, gold, silver and platinum leaves are frequently used. It is the same for the preparation of the support, paper mounted on wood or silk stretched on frame. Each element being prepared by the artist contributes to the realization of an original work.

We will learn to prepare the pigments and use them to create transparencies, lights, relief patterns and to create a personalized creation, free or according to model, in a traditional or more contemporary style.

Noh-Bach

As part of this second collaboration, the ARTONOV festival proposes, for the ARTONOV Spring Series at the BANAD Festival, a performance which echoes the link between Japonisme and Art Nouveau.
In the last 25 years of the nineteenth century, the Ukiyo-e Japanese art movement became a new source of inspiration for European Impressionist and then Art Nouveau painters. In a series of articles published in 1872 in the Renaissance littéraire et artistique magazine, the collector Philippe Burty gave this revolution a name: "Japonisme".

This concert and performance will bring together The Well-Tempered Clavier by J. S. Bach and Japanese Noh theatre. It is structured as a day of Noh broken down into spiritual apparitions and offers the audience a rare opportunity to discover a great variety and to penetrate intimacy. Four masks, two men and two women, all worn by the same actor, are changed in full sight. Moments of choreography without a mask, with or without a fan, or with swords will help the audience understand the unity of the Noh characters and to admire their power and elegance. The almost complete absence of costumes, reduced to the bare minimum, will allow the audience to experience the subtleties of complex body movements that are usually hidden.
The performance will also offer music-lovers the pleasure of hearing again the Preludes and Fugues from the second book of The Well-Tempered Clavier by J. S. Bach, against the new background of this bringing-together, which reveals their theatrical and emotional power, that often remains unnoticed.

Masato MATSUURA - workshop "Niten ichi ryu"

Japanese expert of sword ship and Noh theater, Masato Matsuura comes from one of these branches, the Santo style, practiced in Tokyo. During this course, practitioners will learn the five forms, first in a codified way, then with a work on fluidity, to understand the real applications. This meditation in movement develops fluidity and builds the center and presence of the body.

Aki Kuroda

Hangar will be unveiling the masterly work of the Japanese artist Aki Kuroda as of 19 April 2018. In this first one-man show of the artist in Belgium (since 1995), visitors will discover a series of new works (2016/2017) plus several emblematic paintings.
Through his works, Aki Kuroda takes us to a world laden with ancient myths and stories from his country, Japan. He creates “passages” between different worlds: modernism and contemporary art, East and West, the body and the cosmos, mythology and the future. Very large colourful canvases take up the spaces of Hangar on the theme of the Cosmogarden (interior and external garden/everything is blended in an oneiric jungle).

Documentaire / 1921 / 1:44 / Regie: Verschillende regisseurs / / Japan / Gesproken taal: *Geen* / Ondertiteling: *Geen*

Five Days in March – re-creation

On the eve of the US-British offensive in Iraq on 21 March 2003, Japan joins the invading troops. This is Japan’s first military engagement since 1945, and it provokes many reactions. Against the background of a historical peace demonstration, the young adult characters in Five Days in March tell their personal stories of everyday life in Tokyo. This year, Japanese theatre-maker Toshiki Okada brings a new (!) adaptation of that iconic creation. The first presentation of Five Days in March (at Kunstenfestivaldesarts in 2007) was received with great enthusiasm and admiration. It marked Okada’s break - through in Europe and across the world. In his theatrical language, the logic between words and movement is unclear, as if these are two entirely independent forms of grammar. Balancing between the natural and the artificial, Okada uses stereotypical stories to sketch the profile of a generation of young people who have lost their way; their public participation in the demonstration contrasts with the (highest) personal concerns they share.

Benshi: Chushingura (1926)

Live event / 1926 / 1:15 / Regie: Ikeda Tomiyasu / Cast: Onoe Matsunosuke, Yamamoto Ka'ichi, Katsura Takeo / Japan / Gesproken taal: Japans / Ondertiteling: Engels

International Seminar of Ono Ha Ittō Ryū Kenjutsu
Under the Supervision of Yabuki Yūji, 18th Sōke.

We are very proud, to announce that from Friday June 1st until Sunday June 3rd 2018, we are hosting an international seminar of Ono Ha Ittō Ryū Kenjutsu (小野派一刀流) under the direction of Yabuki Yūji (矢吹裕二), the 18th Sōke of the school.

Yabuki Sōke will be accompanied by Kawakami Kazuo and Asai Masashi, both Menkyo Kaiden.

This seminar might also be of interest to practitioners of Kendō since Schools like Ono Ha Ittō Ryū (or its branches) were at the origin of modern Kendō and Sasamori Takemi’s father, Sasamori Junzō (1886—1976), was not only Sōke of Ono Ha Ittō Ryū, he was also instrumental in the rehabilitation of Kendō in the fifties. He founded and served as the president of the Zen Nihon Shinai Kyōgi Renmei, achieved Kendō 10th dan and was author of the book “This is kendō”.

Yabuki Yūji, is a Tōkyō Metropolitan Police Department Kendō Instructor (Kendō Kyōshi, 7th dan). He was born in Iwaki City (Fukushima Prefecture) on February 10th, 1970. In 1992 he joined The Metropolitan Police Department (警視庁 Keishichō), where he also learned Ono Ha Ittō Ryū.

In 1998, he became a direct student of the 17th Sōke of Ono Ha Ittō Ryū, Sasamori Takemi. He was given Menkyo Kaiden and eventually designated as the 18th Sōke and the third Chief of Reigakudō by Sasamori Takemi, who passed away last summer.

Yabuki Sōke is dedicating his whole life to embody amity and comity (Enman 円満) as passed on by the previous Sōke.

Sato Kimitake: HAKOIRI MUSUME – Girl in the Trunk

The Japanese idiom “Hakoiri Musume” translates into English as “Daughter in a Box”. The term originated in the Edo period (1603-1867) and describes “a young single woman who leads a sheltered life with her protective family” as if she were kept in a box. Widespread in popular culture, the expression has been used as a title for several movies, mangas and a television series, but as Naoko Takemaru, an Associate Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Nevada, argues: in a rapidly evolving society, Hakoiri Musume represents “mostly a [past reality given the] steady increase in the number of young women who live away from their family for [their] education and career.[1]

Hakoiri Musume – Girl in the Trunk, Turin-based Japanese artist Sato Kimitake’s exhibition presented at Albert Baronian gallery on the occasion of the Brussels Gallery Weekend, evokes this phenomenon. The installation depicts the silhouette of a young girl trapped inside a large 1,30 meter high trunk. The work metaphorically conjures Hakoiri Musume, a daughter who has been “put inside a box” and carefully brought up by her family. The trunk is displayed open and reveals a negative cast of a young girl’s body. The figure as such is both present and absent from the trunk.

As Sato Kimitake explains: “just by watching the young girl’s outline, the viewer gazes at the trunk’s true contents. (…) The quality of the box in which something precious is stored reveals the real value of the object, material or item it carries. (…) Although it is only an idiom and should be understood in a figurative sense, taken literally, the act of storing and carrying one’s daughter in a box is an egotistical absurdity.”

Cours d’Ikebana
