Concert Mahler Chamber Orchestra & Mitsuko Uchida

Mahler Chamber Orchestra – Mitsuko Uchida piano, conductor

Programme

Piano Concerto no. 19, KV 459 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
3 Stücke (Lyrische Suite) Alban Berg
Piano Concerto no. 20, KV 466 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Hearing the famous Japanese pianist Mitsuko Uchida play is always a pleasure. Her sensitive musicality, her rigour and her excellent knowledge of Mozart’s work, culminating in several high-flying and award-winning recordings, have sealed her reputation as a premiere interpreter of the Viennese composer’s piano music. Her presence is so vivid and so familiar – she has been performing in some of the world’s leading concert halls for over 40 years – that she has almost become part of our musical landscape. It’s as if she’s always been there. She will perform two of Mozart’s best-known compositions, while conducting the Mahler Chamber Orchestra from behind the piano. Engaging in refined musical dialogue with Uchida is this magnificent ensemble, which was founded 20 years ago by Claudio Abbado.

A new wave of Japanese printmaking

This exhibition focuses on Japanese young contemporary printmakers: seven artists who studied at Musashino Art University in Tokyo and continued working as artists after their graduation. Their works, even if different, coincide in their way of struggle and finding the essence of expression in the process through printmaking (drawing, using layers, printing etc…), using various techniques (Intaglio, lithograph, woodcut and silkscreen). This means that elements of printmaking process become an essential part in the creation of their artwork. In their work, you can see the presence of nature, climate humidity, the change of seasons or a desire for the inner picturesque, which may be related to Japanese introverted personality.

The title “New wave of Japanese printmaking” is inspired by “The great wave of Kanagawa” which is one of the most famous works from Hokusai. This image has become one of the most recurrent when referring to Japanese printmaking. However, Japanese printmaking has changed and received influences from other cultures and movements making it evolve at the same time that uses the essence of its history as a background. This title refers to constant movement and how Japanese printmaking hasn’t stayed stocked into the past and has become something alive that renews itself with “new waves” of artists who incorporate new elements into the existing base culture. It would be great if this will be the answer to the question of what contemporary Japanese printmaking is.

02/15-05/11 Exhibition Voice and Sound Waves
The Japanese Scene WITH YUKIO FUJIMOTO, ATSUSHI NISHIJIMA, Collective SOFTPAD (TAKUYA MINAMI, ICHIRO AWAZU, HAJIME TAKEUCHI, HIROSHI TOYAMA), MAMORU AND LYOTA YAGI.

Felix Frachon Gallery gives “carte blanche” in “LE 26 BY” to Anne-Laure Chamboisier, an art historian and a curator who has been conducting researches on artists working with sound and music in Japan for the past 4 years.
“Le 26BY” is an independent cultural platform located in a beautiful Brussels house, created by Félix Frachon Gallery, a gallery established in Brussels in 2016 by art collector Félix Frachon, engaged in introducing mostly non-european artists developing multidisciplinary practices.
This exhibition invites the public to live a sensory experience through the interactive manipulation of sculptural objects and the listening to a variety of sounds. The diversity of the mediums of this exhibition - sculpture, installation, drawings, videos, witnesses the great quality and plurality of Japanese contemporary creation, through the eyes of three generations of artists. This exhibition offers to eight of the most important artists in Japan today, a significant visibility in Europe. Among them, Yukio Fujimoto is one of the pioneer figures of contemporary creation in Japan. In the 1970s, he focused mainly on composition and electronic performance and, in the mid-1980s, he began to produce sound objects. Having close artistic relationships with Atsushi Nishijima, the Softpad collective and Yagi Lyota, the scenography of the central space of the exhibition is the result of a collaboration, creating a subtle dialogue between their works. These artists have been exhibited in prestigious museums, such as The National Museum in Osaka, the Museum of Modern Art in Shiga or National Center of Art in Tokyo, among others.
Mamoru, a very talented emerging artist, occupies another space with an extremely poetic video installation where text, image and sound invite the viewer to open up to an unexpected space, where our common perception of things is disrupted.

With respect to its importance, this exhibition received the precious support of the JAPAN FOUNDATION.

90 days of light

Solo show of the artist, Michiko Van de Velde at the Japanese garden of Hasselt. She questions the poetic relationship that has always existed between people and spring light. Rather than playing with the medium of light, her approach is to use her Japanese and Belgian backgrounds as a tool. This season is, for her, a reminder of our inner light's ability to bloom.

COURTISANE FESTIVAL 2019 // Artist in focus: Tsuchimoto Noriaki

After the focus dedicated to the work of Ogawa Shinsuke and Ogawa Productions in 2017, Courtisane will present a programme of the films of Tsuchimoto Noriaki, one of the most important postwar documentary filmmakers of Japan. The program will comprise of a varied selection of his films from the period 1963 — 1984, including some of his rarely shown first documentaries directed for Iwanami Productions, two films about the Japanese student movement as well as a selection of the influential films he dedicated to the victims of the Minamata mercury poisoning disaster. In order to gain further insight into the practice and vision of Tsuchimoto Noriaki we have invited filmmaker John Gianvito, whose work is greatly influenced by Tsuchimoto’s methods, and scholar of Japanese studies Aaron Gerow, who will give an illustrated lecture about the work of the director.

05/10-08/18 Exhibition Images and illustrations from the Japanese Edo period (1603-1868)

An exhibition featuring some of the finest works from the magnificent collection of ancient Japanese books in the Rare Books Reserve of UCLouvain Library will showcase the art of images and illustrations. Aiming to promote the rich diversity of Japanese culture, Japan donated more than 13 600 books to the Université catholique de Louvain in the 1920s, the oldest dating back to the 13th century. At the time, it was regarded as the most beautiful collection housed outside Japan. The vast majority of the items were created during the Edo period ( 1603 —1868 ), considered one of the great eras of artistic and cultural development, when not only society but also attitudes to art were evolving. Against this backdrop, the ukiyo-e movement developed, introducing innovative themes that reflected the interests of the urban bourgeoisie : female beauties and famous courtesans, erotica, the theatre and sumo wrestlers, fantastic creatures and nature. E-hon, Japanese picture books with accompanying text, are one of the most remarkable examples of the works produced during this period and feature strongly in the collection donated to the University. The Japanese prints held by Musée L, together with the collection from the Rare Books Reserve of the UCLouvain Library will provide an opportunity to admire the handiwork of Japanese grand masters such as Hiroshige, Hokusai, Kuniyoshi, Utamaro, Kunisada, Harunobi and Toyokuni. Visitors will also be able to learn about the skills and techniques used to create these images and illustrations.

Tsubasa Hori (Japanese Taiko drummer) Tsubasa currently lives in Antwerp, Belgium. Born in Kyoto, Tsubasa started playing piano from the early age of three and found Taiko at the age of eleven. She later graduated from the Kyoto City, Horikawa Music High School (Percussion Class). While studying Tsubasa became involved in playing drumkit in bands and dove into the world of 'Japanese Rock'. After this period Tsubasa moved to Sado Island in 1996 and became a performing member of the Japanese Drumming Group 'Kodo' for the next 14 years. Tsubasa was not only involved in the group as a mainstage performer, but also in writing pieces, arranging works, and in 2008 Tsubasa put together a female based Wadaiko production 'Cocon', allowing the exploration of female Taiko performance in this artform. In 2010 Tsubasa moved and became a citizen of Belgium and became involved in works and collaborated with musicians who's works are pushing the definition of genre, theater productions, dance works, fashion related performances, and artworks. Tsubasa does not only perform using Taiko, she also uses a number of other instruments that have a distinct flavour of the Japanese environment including Koto (Japanese Harp), Voice, Piano, Kyujo-orin, and Music Box etc... with all of these to a high regard of the music community and the experience of performing in over 40 different countries in her career. tsubasahori.com

Il Corpo Dentro

Festival Artonov

A performance that combines Buthoh dance, Bauhaus design and music.
In the exceptional setting of the Villa Empain, the opening night of the ARTONOV Festival pays tribute to Bauhaus for the one hundredth anniversary of the movement born in Weimar. Il Corpo Dentro is a show created by three artists: Sonia Biacchi (costume designer), Atsushi Takenouchi (choreographer and Butoh dancer) and Hiroko Komiya (musician), who engage in different aesthetic approaches yet possess similar philosophies. The original costumes in Bauhaus style, on loan from the Venice Theatrical Research Center, are inspired by the three-part ballet of Oskar Schlemmer. The staging by dancer Atsushi Takenouchi highlights the forms of the space building a true architecture of the body.

Each city has its own mapping system reflecting its shadows, its portrait, catered to those who want to travel by foot or on motorised vehicles. And for those who move a bit differently? Is there a city map for the birds? For dogs? It would be the same for us, if we were to move with our eyes closed; the landmarks necessary to reach our destination would become completely different. We would feel the heat of the sun hit us as we walk into an open square and the smell of butter coming from the bakery around the corner. This evening, it is the perfume of jasmine flowers who will show us the way. Each living being relies on its senses to guide them in the world. So, does a city map for ghosts exist? And for ourselves, in our dreams, which map would serve us?

Cool Japan

Cool Japan showcases the world’s fascination with Japanese visual culture.
Using historic highlights from its own Japan collection and selected loans, the MAS shows how contemporary icons are predicated on a long tradition.
Not only is there lots to see, there’s also lots to do. Visitors can converse with Pepper, the humanoid robot. For fans of comic books and graphic novels, there are thousands of mangas to choose from for a good read.

Cool Japan is an exhibition of the National Museum of World Cultures, the Netherlands adapted by the MAS, Antwerp.

Kara-da-Kara by Azusa Takeuchi

(Belgian premiere)

Young Japanese choreographer Azusa Takeuchi echoes Martha Graham’s words that “the body never lies and the more time goes by, the more traces become visible” to present “a piece on the body’s existence”, questioning the foundation of certain philosophies that distinguish the body from the soul. To address the soul and summon ghosts, she has crept into the light installation by the visual artist Nicolas Villenave (The song of filament) consisting of 81 bulbs that create waves around her flexible, deliberately contorted body. In a moving space featuring a sky of stars or a sea of fireflies, the installation produces a rhythm in tune with the dancer’s movements, which live musician Shinjiro Yamaguchi strives to recompose with great finesse.
With the meanings of the words “kara” (void), “karada” (body) and “dakara” (because), Azusa Takeuchi provides the keys to a performance in the form of meditation, extreme care and attention, and infinite poetry rooted in Japanese culture.

10th Anniversary Kobe University Brussels European Centre Symposium
‘Open Science, Evolving Societies: New Horizons for EU-Japan Research’

The high-level Symposium ‘Open Science, Evolving Societies: New Horizons for EU-Japan Research ’will take place on 22 October 2019 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Jointly organized with the VUB, this event celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Kobe University Brussels European Centre Symposium, and the continued active presence of Kobe University in Brussels.
The symposium will open with presentations by Kobe University President Hiroshi Takeda, VUB Rector Caroline Pauwels, DG RTD Director-General Jean-Eric Paquet, and H.E. the Japanese Ambassador to the EU Kazuo Kodama.

This year’s event directly builds on the recent adoption of the EU-Japan EPA and SPA, which provide fresh impetus to EU-Japan cooperation in R&I, and on the new perspectives offered by a future Association of Japan to Horizon Europe.

Three parallel sessions will address highly topical themes in the areas of economics, natural sciences, and SSH:
• EU-Japan EPA and SPA: joining forces for a rule-based international economic order
• Food system for quality, safety and functionality
• Preserving the past, celebrating the present, embracing the future: a new era for EU-Japan cultural heritage research.

In addition, three interactive workshops and brokerage events will aim at developing concrete EU-Japan research projects in response to Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe priorities.
As the first Japanese university to open an office in Brussels in 2010, Kobe University has been a pioneer in developing research and innovation cooperation between Japan and Europe, with over 140 agreements with European universities. One of the most resolutely international of Japanese academic and research institutions, Kobe University was the first Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in Japan, actively participated in Erasmus + and FP7, and in several consortia responding to Horizon 2020 research calls.
The 10th Anniversary Symposium will feature over 40 speakers who will present some of the latest results in key research areas between Japanese universities and partner institutions in the EU. Presentations and open workshops will provide the audience with ample opportunities to interact with leading Japanese and European researchers, and gain valuable insights into the latest collaborative projects between the EU and Japan.

Concert Paradise Lost: Strauss, Wagner, Takemitsu, Yoshimatsu

Earthly paradise, a romantic idyll, true love: this is the beginning of the programme. From Strauss’ symphonic birthday present for his wife to the sorrow and homesickness of Takemitsu, in his typically strange style uniting Japanese tradition and western innovation.
With Vaughan Williams’ lark, dark clouds threaten and the mood becomes gloomy. Yoshimatsu mourns the nearly extinct toki or Japanese crested ibis, and Richard Strauss ends with the death of an artist.

Exhibition Hāfu2Hāfu

Concert The Scarlet Princess

A major theatre event of Europalia Romania and this event will be part of the amazing opening show of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

The Scarlet Princess is a piece by Tsuruya Nanboku IV. Nanboku was the son of a 19th century dry-cleaner when he joined a famous kabuki troupe to then become one of the most famous writers of his time.

In The Scarlet Princess, Father Seigen falls in love with one of his young disciples. Forced to have a platonic love, they both decide to kill themselves. But the priest survives. Seventeen years later, a princess comes to the temple to become a nun. The priest sees in her the reincarnation of his former lover.

The Scarlet Princess is a play about obsessive passions, murders and vengeance. And that’s why Silviu Purcarete, great master of the Romanian theatre, chose to stage this story, using his great talent for images and irony.

He is adapting the kabuki codes – sophisticated costumes and make-up, abundance of stage tricks, etc. – and use them so the ten performers and technicians can fully occupy the Grande Halle. He is also using European techniques, a hint of expressionism, an atmosphere and excursus that underline the humour of the original text.
