Exhibition EXCHANGE - BELGIË X JAPAN

The Aarschotse Artist Hilde Hermans is a storyteller in images and printmaking. Yuriko Miyoshi, a Japanese printmaker works in the Netherlands and Japan.
With EXCHANGE, the idea, the techniques and the material including Washi (= Japanese paper), and also music, we create a new story. In EXCHANGE are further shown: photos of Japan by Roel Vermeylen, from his own point of view; the Nagasaki print series by Ad Stijnman, Dutch printmaker and print historian, who visited Japan several times for his research; and prints from Yuriko's collection of international printmakers related to Japan. They are made by Veerle Rooms, Claude Sinte and Maurice Pasternak from Belgium, by artists from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, UK, Canada, USA and Japan.
With all this we want to introduce the world of printmaking.

NIHON DŌBANGA: ETCHING IN JAPAN, 1783–1900

Participant fee: € 20 per persoon.
Buy your ticket via het Gasuthuis.
Each participant receive a Fukubukuro (Japanese lucky bag) including an original small etching!

Japanese print art is best known for its woodcut (moku-hanga), the classic Japanese color print art, also known as Ukiyo-e. This beloved Japanese prints led to Japonism in Europe after 1860 and was partly the reason. This lecture provides an overview of how, within the Japanese printing tradition, people independently developed the etching technique (dō-banga) into their own school. It gives a glimpse of a kind of prints that is only known to a few specialists outside of Japan and is shown here to a larger audience. After the lecture, some original 19th-century Japanese woodcuts and etchings will be shown along with tools and materials for making prints. Dr. Ad Stijnman is a Dutch printmaker and print historian.

Taïkophonic live & Closing of the exhibition Hafu2Hafu

A fantastic, silent and forceful musical encounter! Experience the art of Taïko during the closing night of the exhibition Hafu2Hafu by photographer Tetsuro Miyazaki.

This evening will be all about cultural mixing that is half Japanese - half other.

TAÏKOPHONIC is a unique meeting of the ancient Japanese art of Taïko, a traditional wooden drum – with the fine, little noises of analog instruments called monotrons. Despite the apparent incongruity, their universes get along well. The project is carried by two musicians mixing their multidisciplinary experiences through experimentation, improvisation on silence, the feeling of emptiness and of fullness.

Taïkophonic is a hybrid project between traditional Far East and contemporary music & dance. The duo is composed by Maïa Aboueleze and Marc Van Eyck.

Before the concert, from 6 to 7 pm, discover and try out the art of Chinese-Japanese calligraphy with a warming glass of sake.

Workshop MOKU-HANGA: Japanese woodcut printing workshop

Participants fee: per workshop € 20 per persoon.
Buy your ticket via het Gasuthuis
* max 10 people per workshop.
* Each participant receive a set of washi to use in this printing workshop. Included in this set is Sekishu Kozo, a traditional handmade paper registered as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

This is an introduction workshop for the moku-hanga technique, as used for the well-known Ukiyo-e, "prints of the floating world". After a brief explanation and demonstration, we will try to print the woodcuts with beautiful Japanese classical designs with the help of already cut plates such as suri-shi (the printer). We do this with water-based inks, yamato nori (a kind of starch) and horse-hair brushes, and we print on Japanese paper with a baren (a Japanese traditional instrument). The printing workshop is open to everyone, from children to adults, from non-artists to artists. Make your special printed cards and take them home with the rest of the Washi (Japanese paper)!

For detailed information

11/8 Concert/Theater U ki yo E, a visual and audible journey through the structure of a woodblock print

Woodblock print number 94 Mama no momiji Tekona no yashiro Tsugihashi (Maple trees at Mama, Tekona Shrine and Linked Bridge) from One hundred famous views of Edo by the Japanese artist Hiroshige (1797–1858), forms the starting point of the performance. The various layers – and therefore also colours – of the woodblock print are interpreted musically as well as visually. The performance carries you from one atmosphere into another, from one colour into another, from one (musical) landscape into another. Several musical robots of the Logos Foundation are set up on stage amidst a white polystyrene landscape. Long strings are attached to the poly-styrene stage elements. The stage becomes one large instrument. Maja Jantar represents vocal acrobatics and a crystal clear direction that merges all elements into a poetic story. The performance is composed of the individual (abstract and anecdotic) elements that are part of the wood block print.
Kristof Lauwers steers the robots and operates the electronics. Laura Maes plays various instruments as well as a long string installation. The music is composed by Lauwers & Maes.
The combination of musical automatons, traditional instruments, electronics, voice and home-built instruments – that are incorporated in the scenery – allow us to create simple as well as complex worlds of sound, each conveying a very unique character.

Japan Square Filmfestival

Film Fest Gent helps Japan-Square Film Festival 2020 online

After we were forced to cancel our 11th edition in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and all attempts to postpone to a later timing this year failed, we’ve finally come up with the solution to organize the festival online instead. Organizing an online event is unknown territory for our team but giving up is never an option for us. We are happy that Film Fest Gent came to the rescue to support us with their existing knowledge and experience. The Japan Square online Film Festival will take place from 2 - 8 December.
