Onoda, 10000 nights in the jungle Late 1944. Japan is losing the war. On the orders of the mysterious Major Taniguchi, the young Hiroo Onoda is sent to an island in the Philippines just before the American landing. The Other Japan Newspaper articles, TV shows, documentaries, travel blogs and tourist photography constantly reproduce stereotypical images of Japan with their opposing poles of tradition (Fuji-san, temples, geisha …) and modernity (high technology, mega-cities, emotional indifference, social isolation …). These poles also confirm and feed a meta-stereotype: Japan is different and – in its difference – cannot be understood by ‘the Others‘. The project “The Other Japan” now asked Ghent University exchange students in Kanazawa, Kobe, Kyushu, Akita and other cities to overcome the tourist gaze with its stereotypical images and “place myths” and take a closer look in order to find the visual “other” behind the “othered” Japan. The exhibition, of around 50 selected photographs, which has already been shown at Kanazawa University, will take place in the Centre of Architecture and Art (Vandenhove Pavilion) of Ghent University. |

16th International Conference of the European Association of Japanese Studies (EAJS) As the most important international conference for Japan Studies, which attracts more than 850 speakers, the triennial international conferences of the EAJS gathers scholars from Europe, Japan, the United State and beyond, specialized in a wide variety of research fields related to Japan. The conference is divided into 14 sections/research disciplines: Urban, Regional and Entironmental Studies; language and Linguistics; Modern Literature; Pre-Modern Literature; Visual Arts; Performing Arts; Economics; Business and Political Economy; Politics and International Relations; Intellectural History and Philosophy; History; Religion and Religous Thought; AWA/Anthropology and Sociology; AJE/Japanese Language Education; Media. The 2021 EAJS international conference has been organized by the Ghent University Institute of Japanese Studies and is due to the COVID-19 pandemic organized as online event. |

Rirkrit Tiravanija pavilion A unique experience in the garden of Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens. Every first Sunday of the month, the pavilion of artist Rirkrit Tiravanija is activated during a free tea ceremony. Reservation is required. Rirkrit Tiravanija's 20-metre maze is based on the floor plan of MDD's largest exhibition space. The labyrinth leads to a Japanese wooden tea house in it’s centre, where the tea tasting takes place. Like much of Tiravanija's work, Untitled 2018 (the infinite dimensions of smallness) requires direct presence and personal engagement, offering opportunities for interaction and activating the senses. Whereas earlier versions of the work (in Singapore and Poitiers, both 2018) were made of bamboo, for this version the artist chose to build the labyrinth out of scaffolding, in reference to the recent renovation of the museum. In this way, the artist makes a strong connection between the ongoing work at the museum and the rules of hospitality. |

Japan Film Festival Brussels "Japan Film Festival Brussels" presents the first Japanese Film Festival in Brussels from 17 to 24 September. The Festival will offer previews of films by both young directors and established artists. During the car-free day on Sunday 19 September, 2pm to 6pm, animations, an exhibition, and various stands will take place at Espace Lumen, while workshops (culinary, Ikebana, calligraphy, origami, martial arts demonstration, fashion show, concert,...) will be held at the Maritime Station / Maison De La Poste (Tour & Taxis). |

Tea Ceremony Construit en matériaux traditionnels importés du Japon et maintenant entouré d’un jardin sec dans l’esprit du zen, le Pavillon de Thé confié à Mariemont par l’école Urasenke du Thé de Kyôto accueille chaque mois les visiteurs désireux de découvrir un aspect fondamental de la culture traditionnelle du Japon, la «cérémonie du Thé». En marge de la vie courante, la cérémonie du Thé participe aux nombreuses fêtes qui jalonnent l’année japonaise. Le Pavillon de Thé devient à cette occasion le réceptacle privilégié de l’expression de quelques facettes intimes et pleines de sensibilité de la tradition. L’hôte veille à concrétiser ces précieux instants par des ustensiles, des objets ou encore des gâteaux, bonbons et autres douceurs choisis et préparés avec un soin tout particulier. À l’issue de la présentation de la cérémonie, les participants goûtent le thé vert traditionnel «matcha» et un échange s’engage avec le maître de Thé. COMPLET |

Piano recital Kotaro Fukuma Japanese pianist Kotaro Fukuma is the winner of the First Prize and the Chopin Prize at the 2003 Cleveland International Piano Competition. It was the start of his impressive international career. He performs all over the world and has already released sixteen CDs to critical acclaim. He brings us a selection of the most beautiful works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn during this benefit concert in aid of the non-profit organisation Pinocchio, which works for the interests and welfare of children and young people with burn injuries. |

Mira Sanders & Cédric Noël – “A Voyage into the Moon” Hiroshima, 6 August 1945: a sudden flash, a violent explosion, the atomic bomb. Somewhere on the Moon, a creature feels under threat. Shortly after that, the Japanese army receives a signal from a mysterious astronaut. Are we no longer alone in the universe? A Voyage into the Moon is a body of recent work by the artistic duo Mira Sanders and Cédric Noël. The culture, veneration of the underground, and the history of the Land of the Rising Sun served as a source of inspiration for both artists as they wrote several fictional stories and created an extensive series of publications. In conjunction with the première of their new medium-length film Mission Report and the first showing of their new installations, the Musée du Botanique will be exhibiting their complete works created between 2017 and 2021 for the very first time. Beautifully staged in a futuristic scenography, the exhibition combines reality and fiction. Mira Sanders and Cédric Noël play leapfrog with fantasy and reality, linking actual events to fanciful fabrications. The drawings, films, scale models, audio works, texts, and installations constitute a fascinating and witty journey through the museum. Do not be afraid of the thousand viscous legs of the mukade centipede!
