CHERS

In Japan, people know how to live and communicate with their ancestors and other ghosts. Kaori Ito is the choreographer of the sensitive depth. In Chers, she directs six artists who have lost someone close: five young and powerful dancers and an actress full of life – A mother? A Chaman? An exorcist?

Precise, chiselled, smooth, sincere, intense, extreme: this dance is their buoyant dialogue with the ones that have left. By giving shape to the invisible, they reach with brilliance the emotional connection that keeps us going, hangry but serene – alive.

Shimabuku: Instrumental

Exhibition of contemporary Japanese artist Shimabuku:

Can art be instrumental or useful? Shimabuku’s work gives this recurrent demand an absurd spin, while reaffirming art’s essential role in the realm of the imagination. His work turns our view of daily life on its head, enabling us to see things from a new perspective, infused with surreal humour and playful beauty. Taking various forms – from transformed objects to actions documented on video, often accompanied by short poetic texts – Shimabuku’s engaging projects reveal his curiosity about the world and awaken ours. For his WIELS exhibition, his first in Belgium, Shimabuku presents a selection of recent works, together with little-known or rarely shown existing pieces

Circular Design inspired by Japan

The exhibition brings together the results of a three-year study to reduce waste in the interior-furniture sector. Researchers gained inspiration from Japanese circular design such as Furoshiki folding cloth, Kigumi wood joinery, and Origami paper folding to make their potential as circular design possible in the Western design world. The exhibition brings together the various design ideas such as wrapping cloths, lamps made from paper and wood and other products available for dismantling as well as unique KOMAKO pavilion from Oak Village, Japan, whereby the principle for Circulair Design will be discussed.

Origami - Artonov

Inspired by the Japanese art of folding paper, Origami is a breath-taking spectacle that uses sections of a shipping container to create different shapes that form the stage for the daredevil acrobatics of Justine Bernachon. Origami was born of a collaboration between choreographer Satchie Noro and set designer and scenographer Silvain Ohl. Together, they transform a 12-metre container into an airborne and mobile stage and imbue with poetry and humanity this imposing object that has become a symbol of globalisation.

Nuage - Artonov

Nuage is an installation in choreography for a dancer and a musician and an imaginary cloud.
A study in sound linked to the breath and the wind.
A study in dance dedicated to the transformation of form and suspension, in a setting imagined by Silvain Ohl.
This performance, created in 2013 and first performed by Satchie Noro, has been recreated for her daughter, Yumi Rigout. Accompanied by musician, Fred Costa, the aerial acrobat invites us on an aerial journey that assumes chameleon-like dimensions: a refuge, a net, a nest, a pedestal, a sieve, a diving board, a trap, a lifeboat…

Arpentueuses - Artonov

Arpenteuses is an ephemeral performance that continually folds and unfolds. It convokes three beings that become the architects of a space that never ceases to reinvent itself. Three bodies meld together, melt into chairs, moving them and moving themselves. Bodies that enter, occupy and define the space in a constant quest for balance, tension and dialogue with an object and with another.

Nine bells - Artonov

In Nine Bells, Aya Suzuki moves among an array of nine metal bells like a Japanese Butoh dancer. American composer Tom Johnson not only set down the notes of this piece, but also the path the performer has to follow through the instruments. The result is a repetitive, hypnotic ritual for the eyes and ears. Aya uses Johnson’s original bells from 1979. This performance will take place on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition Shin hanga - The new prints of Japan (1900-1960) at the Art and History Museum.

Phantasticus - Artonov

The Japanese art of theatre and dance Nō echoes the very life force invoked by the Stylus Phatasticus, a unique Western musical style born in the 17th century, in which all liberties seem permissible. Each moment brings about surprises, emotions, playfulness or even meditation.
Masato Matsuura’s choreography, based on a very pure tradition of Nō and infused with astonishing beauty and mysterious intensity, reveals here the hidden dance-like dimensions that are the lifeblood of all baroque music, present even and perhaps especially in the freest music of the period. The music of Biber engages in dialogue with that of Froberger and Weckmann, all masters of the strikingly modern-sounding Stylus Phantasticus.

Dans l'ombre, les yôkai - Artonov

Stéphane Ferrandez presents Rakugo, a Japanese theatrical art born 400 years ago that skilfully combines gesture and spoken word. It takes no more than a minimalistic set, a few props and the artful mimics of the storyteller, invariably seated on the floor, to transport you into an imaginary universe. Come experience the thrill of these chilling traditional tales from Japanese folklore and perhaps even come head-to-head with your first yōkai.
Following each performance will be a guided tour given by Massimo Minneci, the owner of the Maison Tenaerts.

Japan’s Book Donation to the University of Louvain: Japanese Cultural Identity and Modernity in the 1920’s.

In the 1920s, Japan donated roughly 3,000 books to the University of Leuven, totaling nearly 14,000 volumes, in addition to several maps and some works of art. This represented Japan's contribution to the reconstruction of the University Library, which had been completely reduced to ashes in August 1914. More than hundred years later, the donation is an important and often forgotten part of the heritage of KU Leuven and the Université Catholique de Louvain.

Emergent Tokyo-Designing the spontaneous city

Tokyo is one of the most vibrant and livable cities on the planet, a megacity that somehow remains intimate and adaptive. For cities worldwide mired in crisis and seeking new models for the future, Tokyo’s success at balancing massive growth and local communal life poses a challenge: can we design other cities to emulate its best qualities?

Daisuke Kosugi: Red Forests and Blue Clouds

WIELS former resident Daisuke Kosugi presents the sound installation Red Forests and Blue Clouds, originally commissioned for the 2022 Aichi Triennial in Japan, in the WIELS Project Room.

Kosugi has explored the question of “whether pain can be communicated (to others)” through video, sculpture, and performance. He investigates how art can respond to pain that is difficult to verbalize or manifest, ranging from wounds caused by social conflict and lack of freedom, to trauma and healing, to empathy fatigue suffered by caregivers such as medical professionals. Red Forests and Blue Clouds explores, in abstract terms, the tension between “reality as data in visible form” conveyed through screens, manipulated by visual technology to present only what we want to see, and “reality as lived by flesh and blood bodies.”
