Keigo Mukawa – Flagey Piano Days

Since winning the 2nd prize of the Long-Thibaud Competition in 2019 and 3rd prize of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2021, the career of Japanese pianist Keigo Mukawa has really taken off. During his recital at the Flagey Piano Days, this young pianist proves that he is at ease in the refined worlds of Bach and Mozart, in Ravel's colourful sound landscape as well as in the contemporary imaginative music of Akira Nishimura.

Live at Museum : Taïkophonic

Wood meets waves, tradition meets innovation. Taïko Drums meets Monotrons. This duo is a unique meeting between one of the most traditional (and iconic) japanese drums and analogic instruments. Despite the incongruity, their universes get along. The project is carried throug experimenting, improvising on silence, feeling both emptiness and fullness : two musicians combining and mixing their multidisciplinary experiences.

Michiko Van de Velde - Timing

Through her work, Michiko Van de Velde seems to want to capture the awareness of the plurality of time and space, and especially the elusiveness of time, in images. For her, the fleeting time and space is visible and tangible in the permanently changing light.

kimono conference
KIMONO I ÉTERNELLE FASCINATION

Feniks Taiko & friends - Bonten
Feniks Taiko & friends - Bonten

The founders of both groups – Masataka Kobayashi and Grete Moortgat- share the same passion for and vision of music and taiko. It is their ambition to detach taiko from its niche in world-music and lift it to its full, independent place on the international music scene. To this end, both leaders have collaborated on numerous occasions with artists from a vast array of disciplines in order to explore and show the diversity and musicality of taiko.

With this vision as a starting point, they train their players to become dynamic, virtuoso and flexible all-round taiko-musicians. In this concert the alumni of the Araumi Daiko Academy return to the essence of taiko; speed and strength, sweat and discipline, thunderous rhythms and tight choreographies.

A concert not to be missed!

Art Nouveau in Japan – A Return to the Source of Inspiration

Art Nouveau’s style and ideology were developed as an answer to the need for a new approach to art and design at the end of the nineteenth century. At the backbone of this development was Japanese art (and Japonisme), which provided a major inspiration to the art and design world of the time. However, the popularity and global development of the movement in its turn provided a new impetus to its land of origin. In Japan, Art Nouveau encouraged artists to transcend art and design genres, and to re-evaluate traditional crafts and designs, activities that can be said to be the starting point of modern Japanese craft design.

This exhibition introduces the influence and development of Art Nouveau in Japan. It will feature graphic works of artists that were considered central figures linked to the art movement in Japan, and kimono, a medium in which Art Nouveau played an important role. This exhibition is exhibited in two venues: part 1 (chapter 1, 2 and 3) at Les Halles Saint-Géry, and part 2 (chapter 4) at the Japan Information and Cultural Centre (JICC) of the Embassy of Japan in Brussels (Rue Van Maerlant 1, 1000 Bruxelles).

KIMONO TODAY

The kimono (literally “things you wear”,) is seen today as a symbol of Japanese tradition as well as national and cultural identity. While the kimono is less visible in everyday life than in the 20th century, it still is a garment present in all aspects of daily life in Japan: worn at home, at work, at street festivals and at ceremonial occasions and at the moment we witness a revival in street fashion. This side of the kimono, however, is hardly shown in exhibitions, which often focus on the flamboyant, on the extravaganza of expensive and exclusive kimono worn for special occasions. By showing a selection of kimono from the Ruth Jäschke Private Collection, we will introduce you to kimono in all of its varieties and its relevance in contemporary Japan. Interviews with Japanese exchange students and a kimono master, as well as photos taken by students from Ghent during their stay in Kanazawa additionally provide a more intimate account of the lived kimono experience and add new layers of meaning. Come to the Vandenhove Pavilion to feel and experience the kimono.

Between Japonism and Art Nouveau: Retracing the Hybrid Influences in Privat Livemont's Works

A talk organised as part of the exhibition ‘Privat Livemont. Fleurs à l’affiche! Bloemenpracht!'

We have the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Saskia Thoelen (Art/Fashion historian at Bunka Gakuen University, Japan) at the Autrique House for a talk organised as part of the exhibition ‘Privat Livemont. Fleurs à l’affiche! Bloemenpracht!’. (Lecture in English)

It is widely known that the formative characteristics of Art Nouveau, such as the usage of natural elements, asymmetry, compositions with blank spaces, planar expressions and bold colors were influenced by Japanese art. The movement’s ideology of equality between the arts and crafts and the return of art in everyday life, was equally influenced by Japan’s aesthetic thought. Many Art Nouveau artists collected Japanese art and integrated influences from Japanese art in the development of their own Art Nouveau expressions. In Privat Livemont’s work, this tendency is also visible.
This presentation will discuss the influence of Japanese art on Privat Livemonts posters and artworks. Livemont's works will be compared with concrete ukiyo-e prints and Japanese figurative characteristics that Belgian Art Nouveau artists were aware of at the time.

'An inner dialogue with yourself thanks to the generosity of plants'

IKENOBO is said to be the origin of ikebana and its history goes back to the 15th century. Ikenobo's history encompasses both the classical and the modern, the two constantly interacting. The major developments can be found in 3 recognizable styles: 'Rikka' (standing flowers) - 'Shoka' (living flowers) and Jiyuka (free style).

The INTENTION of an IKENOBO IKEBANA arrangement is not only to express beauty, but also the passage of time and the feeling of the heart. We are part of the universe, living with the seasons and therefore also the ephemeral.
The FEATURES of IKENOBO IKEBANA are: LIFE/TO LIVE, space, emptiness, line, asymmetry.

Welcome to discover this artform as part of the Japanese culture.
No entrance fee for the exhibition.

Solo Exhibition of the 'Tale of Genji' series by Mizuho Koyama at Art on Paper Brussels 2023

Gallery Kitai is proud to present Mizuho Koyama's 'The Tale of Genji' series at the Art on Paper Brussels, a specialized international art fair dedicated to paper-based artworks.
Mizuho Koyama, after years of studying classical calligraphy, has developed a distinctive style that combines text with abstract imagery to reinterpret and create contemporary interpretations of ancient poems and stories. From 2019 to 2020, Koyama embarked on the ambitious project of producing all 55 chapters of what is considered the world's oldest novel, 'The Tale of Genji,' consisting of 54 chapters plus the 'Kumogakure' chapter. This 11th-century love story of aristocrats from the Heian period has been reborn in the modern era through Koyama's unique contemporary calligraphic expressions. Join us as this timeless narrative is revitalized for the Reiwa era.

Conference
Godzilla et ses 70 ans, la naissance du Kaiju Eiga.

Immerse yourself in the world of Japanese cinema through an emblematic figure of popular culture “Godzilla” who has continued to fascinate since his creation in 1954.
Through this conference, Francesco, our “master speaker” will try to answer everything you always wanted to know about Godzilla.
How and when was he born? Who is its creator?
What does Godzilla mean? What is the link between Godzilla to the films of master Akira Kurosawa?
How many films have there been about this character since his existence in 1954?
Who are the actors and actresses who participated in these films? The evolution of Godzilla over the ages?
Is Godzilla a hero who wants to save humanity or destroy it? And what does Godzilla represent for Japanese society today?

Want to know the answers to all these questions, meet on 11/16 at 7
p.m. at the Mediathèque.
