Snow White

This ballet is based on a fairy tale by The Brothers Grimm and takes the vibrant style of a Disney animated movie. It is a colorful and lively production that is suitable for all ages. The story of the beautiful princess Snow White is transformed into a magical dance spectacle. Classical ballet, theater, a celebrity as a narrator, dancing animals, and a dose of humor come together to create an unforgettable experience for the whole family!
This ballet is a perfect introduction to ballet for children. It is an hour-long, narrated version of the classic fairy tale, performed.

Brussels City Ballet  is led by Aki Nishio from Japan. She is a professional ballet dancer, teacher and choreographer who works in Japan, Belgium and abroad.  Since Ms Nishio is artistic director of the company, she is welcoming talented japanese ballet dancers connecting with dancers in Belgium.

Shorinji Kempo Kagami Biraki

The martial art of Shorinji Kempo was founded in 1947 by a Japanese master named So Doshin.
Through our training, we aim to strengthen our self-confidence.
This increased confidence empowers us to take action when faced with injustice.

This event is a celebration of Kagami-Biraki, which we commemorate through our demonstrations.

Following the demonstration, we will have a Mochi-tsuki taikai with the audience.
It would bring us great joy to "open" this auspicious year together with everyone, as we believe in the power of good fortune.

KODO ONE EARTH TOUR "WARABE"

The Japanese word Kodo has two meanings. First it means  “heartbeat”, secondly “children of the drum”. The Kodo group members already for many years travel around the five continents trying to build bridges between different cultures thereby using their Japanese drum, the “taiko”.

The” heartbeat” is the basic source of all rhythms, but also of life. The sound of the big taiko is very similar to the heartbeat as it is perceived by the child in its mothers womb. “Children of the drum” represents Kodo’s desire to play the drums in a simple way, with the heart of a child.

On their “One Earth Tour” Kodo tries  to communicate with everybody and to synchronize heartbeats in order to achieve one world peace. By crossing geographical and language barriers they want to make mankind aware of the fact that the world is one community.

For this earth has only one people, one reality, one heartbeat.

Antwerp Spring Festival
Opening concert: Spiegel im Spiegel

Not only is Spiegel im Spiegel the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s most played work, it has also spent years at the top of the Klara Top 100. The work takes centre stage at the opening concert of the Antwerp Spring Festival which hopes to provide an answer to our hectic and digital, hyper-fast daily lives. The search for inner peace is of all times, and we combine music by Johann Sebastian Bach with that of Ryuichi Sakamoto, the recently deceased Japanese ‘king of minimalism’. We also bring the popular Max Richter, the resonant name of John Adams and, of course, Arvo Pärt himself. There are also two soloists, fantastic Japanese pianist Gen Tomuro from Tokyo and violinist Elise Bertrand from the ranks of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, the breeding ground for top talent. The whole thing is accompanied by Casco Phil. Join us on a meditative journey through history in search of inner peace and beauty.

Rakugo Performance by Cyril Coppini

On April 21st, we will also celebrate Heritage Day at the Japanese Garden, and in a very special way. Cyril Coppini, a Frenchman from Nice who currently resides in Japan, will tell stories on the theme of "Home" in the rakugo tradition. Rakugo is traditional Japanese comedy, stand-up comedy from the Edo period. After the performance, there will also be a Q&A session about his experiences in Japan as an immigrant and artist. This is a unique opportunity to experience a part of Japanese culture that rarely makes its way to the West due to the language barrier.

© Junya Ishigami associates

Meet the Architect: Jun'ya Ishigami

Jun'ya Ishigami, 'enfant prodige' of contemporary Japanese architecture, founded his own firm in 2004, after his time at Kazuyo Seijima & Associates. Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, maverick Ishigami stands out for his innovative approach that harmoniously blends architecture, nature and engineering.

Ishigami is known for his ephemeral formal language, characterised by lightness and transparency, with which he creates dreamlike objects. His buildings appeal through their new spatiality and environmental richness, and explore the limits of the possible. Japan's Kanagawa Institute of Technology was Ishigami's first major commission. He has since realised a multitude of large and unusual building projects in Asia, Europe and the United States. His latest project is the Zaishui Art Museum in China, whose columns seem to rise from the lake on which it is located. This linear one-kilometre-long museum is a powerful architectural gesture amid the overwhelming nature all around.

This unique talk will draw you into the poetic and innovative world of Jun'ya Ishigami.

Ryoji Ikeda - Ultratronics [Live Set]

Legendary Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda is not only famous for his hypnotic audiovisual installations, he is also considered a pioneer of glitch music. Starting from nothing more than sine tones, noise, basses and equipped with mathematical formulas, he composes his music. Whereas his previous albums were always built up slowly, 2022's Ultratronics is much more direct: traces of techno emerge more clearly, the bass reverberates deeper than ever and a robot tries to count to thirty. Masterfully, Ikeda never loses control. He will perform Ultratronics live in combination with a visual projection generated from an immense amount of data. With this mix of image and sound, Ikeda creates an unforgettable immersive experience that leaves no one untouched!

Every day is a good day (日々是好日) Takeshi Matsugami

Every Day is a Good Day is Takeshi Matsugami's (1980, Nagoya, Japan) second solo show at Schönfeld Gallery, which now permanently represents the Japanese artist in Europe. Because every day is a good day for enjoying art.
The exhibition features a selection of new, recent, and older paintings, mostly in small formats. Matsugami blends pop art and neo-expressionism, drawing inspiration from everyday objects, bright colors, energetic brushstrokes, and, more recently, landscapes. His work represents a personal visual language that synthesizes contemporary Western and Eastern elements.

Rakugo et violon, l'art du conte japonais

Rakugo is the art of Japanese storytelling, embodying its people, from courtesans to ordinary folk. The authentic charm of Japanese folk tales is brought to life by the sound of Elsa de Lacerda's violin and the voice of Stéphane Ferrandez.
What if it were possible to travel backwards through the centuries, to catch a glimpse of the unspoilt beauty of the floating world, to wander through its narrow streets, to feel its hustle and bustle, to come across its travelling merchants, to sit in its theatres of a thousand lanterns?  Such a time machine does exist. It's called Rakugo. It's a Japanese art of speech that has no equivalent anywhere in the world. It perpetuates the gestures and words of Edo, and embodies its people, from courtesans to ordinary citizens.

Ichiko Aoba performance in Feeërieën 2024 by Ancien Belgique

An event not to miss this year.
The Japanese composer Ichiko Aoba has completely created her own neoclassical and nostalgic universe. With an ethereal mix of folk, ambient and experimental sounds - often inspired by her dreams, nature and art - Aoba manages to enchant plenty. Her boundless music has led to collaborations with Japanese legend Ryuichi Sakamoto, American sound artist Taylor Deupree, as well as Canadian rattler Mac DeMarco and violinist Owen Pallett, among others. Pallett compares her compositions to those of Burt Bacharach and confesses, ‘I have never been so surprised by a musician as Ichiko Aoba.’

Beyond Japan Film Festival 3° edition

We have almost arrived at the third edition of our Beyond Japan festival. Many new features are there to mark its innovative spirit. Let's start with the first. We moved, we are no longer at the post office house, but at the Agora cultural center in Kraainem. Which is located not far from Place Dumont (Stockel).

As you noted, the film industry has evolved a lot in recent years and so have we. From now on, each film will be followed by a cultural demonstration.

These demonstrations will be linked as far as possible to the film that followed. For example, after the comedy about the world of Sumo, we will have the chance to attend a Sumo demonstration organized by the only Sumo club in Leuven.

We will also have a performance of Kagura by artist Masaharu Udagawa and many other surprises.

Don't forget that Beyond Japan is a selection of new Japanese films on our screens.
But for further details, do not hesitate to contact us at this email address: beyondjapanfilmfestival@gmail.com

Zenne Quartet plays Walter Hus
(Ars Musica Festival)

Exploring the music of today, the Tana Quartet returns with new works by Jean-Paul Dessy, Hugh Levick and Marc Monnet. Tana Quartet consists of Antoine Maisonhaute (violin), Yvan Lebrun (violin), Takumi Nozawa (viola) and Jeanne Maisonhaute (cello).

The Tana Quartet epitomises the musical challenges facing a 21st century quartet. Their adventurous approach breaks down the boundaries between classical and contemporary, experimental and visionary. Virtuoso and versatile, their expressiveness takes them through the works of Philip Glass, Steve Reich and the saturation movement. A pioneer in technology, he creates his own hybrid and electro-acoustic instruments. Firmly rooted in his own time and our own future, you'll be treated to world premieres by Jean-Paul Dessy (A Quarter Quartet), Hugh Levick (Shredded for string quartet), Marc Monnet (Quatuor n°11 'Classico') and Vincent David (Arborescence).

28/11 Conference

6th Annual Waseda Brussels Conference
‘Environmental Studies for Carbon Neutrality’

Climate change has become a matter of urgent concern for governments, public opinions, and economies around the world. To tackle this global climate emergency, the international community has developed a broad range of responses, ranging from regulation to technological innovation and, more recently, to financial tools and market mechanisms. Among these, the first and most important is the introduction of carbon pricing – such as emissions trading schemes, green bonds, and carbon taxes.

The conference will present the state of play in policy developments and research on carbon pricing, CBAM, and sustainable finance. Two dozen leading international experts, academics, government officials, and industry representatives from the EU and Japan will share their insights and exchange views and ideas with participants. Key questions will address:

  • How does carbon pricing, carbon taxes, and emission trading schemes work internationally?
  • What is exactly the EU’s new initiative Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)?
  • How does it work? What are its impacts and global consequences?
  • What is the level of acceptance from other countries and industrial sectors?
  • How can market-based mechanisms contribute to carbon neutrality?
  • What are the respective roles of governments and the private sector towards the Green Economy?
  • How can sustainable finance mechanisms such as green bonds support innovation and green technologies?
  • Which innovative market-based initiatives are currently developed in Japan and the EU?
  • What are the specific roles of universities and research in the transition to carbon neutrality?

The programme will include:

  • Welcome remarks by H.E. Kazutoshi Aikawa, Ambassador of the Mission of Japan to the EU, and H.E. Jean-Eric Paquet, Ambassador of the European Union to Japan.
  • Two high-level keynotes by Prof. Ottmar Edenhofer, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, and Prof. Bernard Siman, Vrije Universiteit Brussels and the Egmont Institute.
  • 18 presentations by leading EU and Japanese experts, senior EC officials, and representatives of EU and Japanese companies.
  • Three panel sessions on I. Carbon Pricing and CBAM - Rationale and implementation challenges; II. Transition to the Green Economy; III. Sustainability: A Key Role for Universities.

Not so Silent Short Films! Four 1920s and 1930s Rare Japanese Films with live benshi narration

On December 2 in Cinema ZED Hasselt and on December 3 in STUK in Leuven at the Shortfilm Festival, visitors will have the rare opportunity to experience four Japanese silent films from the 1920s, brought to life with live benshi narration.
In the 1920s, the real stars of Japanese cinema were not so much the actors on the big screen, but rather the benshi (derived from katsudō benshi 活動弁士). These professional voice actors narrated the story live in front of the screen and interpreted the dialogues of the silent film. In collaboration with Prof. Dr. Jan Schmidt of the Japanese Studies Research Group of KU Leuven and renowned benshi Ichirō Kataoka, one of the greats of his generation, this age-old tradition comes to Hasselt and Leuven.

Monday, December 2nd: Cinema ZED Hasselt (20:00)

On December 2nd, in Cinema ZED Hasselt, the 1931 movie “Jirokichi the Rat” (Oatsurae Jirokichi Koshi 御誂治郎吉格子, 1931, Dir. Itō Daisuke, ca. 60 min) will be accompanied by benshi narrator Kataoka Ichirō. This late Edo-period (early 19th century) tale is based on a popular novel by Yoshikawa Eiji. The story follows Jirokichi, a master thief played by famous silent movie star Ōkōchi Denjirō, who falls in love while being constantly on the run from the authorities. Praised for its cinematography, creative captions, and Ōkōchi's performance, it is the only fully preserved silent film by Itō Daisuke.

The screening will be introduced by Carl De Coster (Director of the Japanese Garden Hasselt), Prof. Dr. Jan Schmidt (Head of KU Leuven Faculty of Arts Japanese Studies Research Group), and the film historian Prof. Dr. Ogawa Sawako (Hokkaido University).

In collaboration with Prof. Dr. Jan Schmidt of the Japanese Studies Research Group of KU Leuven and renowned benshi Ichirō Kataoka, one of the greats of his generation, this age-old tradition comes to Hasselt and Leuven.

Tuesday, December 3rd: Shortfilm Festival in Cinema ZED Leuven (18:30)

On December 3rd, Kataoka will narrate three Japanese short films from the 1920s as part of the Shortfilm Festival in Leuven:

“Jiraiya the Hero” (Gōketsu jiraiya 豪傑児雷也, 1921, 19 min.)
This movie fragment tells the story of Jiraiya, a legendary ninja with great powers who sets off on an adventure. He can fly, he can avoid detection by turning himself into a toad, and he has the ability to completely vanish. Starring in this movie is Onoe Matsunosuke, Japan's first movie star who made history as the actor who played the leading role in more than 1.000 films.

“Blood Splattered Takadanobaba” (Chikemuri Takada no Baba 血煙高田の馬場, 1928, 13 min.)
This movie  fragment shows Nakayama Yasubei, a samurai without a master. He lives in the poor part of town and drinks too much. But when his uncle needs him, he is ready. The movie was directed by Itō Daisuke, who stood at the forefront of Japanese silent movies. He specialized in jidaigeki, a movie genre centering on films that take place in pre-modern Japan.

“The Story of the Monkey King” (Saiyūki songokū monogatari, 西遊記 孫悟空物語, 1928, 6 min.)
This movie follows the story of the Monkey King, who goes out in search of Sacred Texts. As an adaptation of the classic 16th Century Chinese novel “Journey to the West,” this animated movie was created by Ōfuji Noburō. By using paper cut-outs, the movie harbors an unusual sense of originality.

The screening will be introduced by Prof. Dr. Jan Schmidt (Head of KU Leuven Faculty of Arts Japanese Studies Research Group), the film historian Prof. Dr. Ogawa Sawako (Hokkaido University), and Sam Clauw B.A. (MA Student, KU Leuven Faculty of Arts Japanese Studies Research Group).

Lecture

Concert / Miscellaneous
RYUICHI SAKAMOTO

With this concert we would like to honour the memory of this great composer. The main event is 3 outstanding (for different reasons) musicians to perform his work for piano. This is a great opportunity to (re)discover songs like Amor, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, Sheltering Sky, Bolerish, Happy End, Aqua...but also songs from his latest album, which Sakamoto composed just before his death... We will also pay attention (outside of the concert hall) to his Techno music, and we try to imagine what would have made him smile!
